Kilbreda Sewing Club

The Kilbreda Sewing Club (KSC) lives on! When we were told we were to begin remote teaching and learning at the start of Semester 2, I set up the KSC.

It was a challenge to create sewing and textiles projects from my home office. However, the positive that came from that, was a new type of connection with the students. Seeing their efforts and detail for the projects has been inspiring!

After Lockdown 2.0 and on our return to onsite learning, I asked members of the KSC if they wanted to continue to sew and create products out of fabrics during lunchtimes and they did.

The first project was a wraparound full circle skirt. No zips, no darts, no interfacing; just mathematics to plot out their own patterns and lots of tailors chalk and measuring tapes to begin shaping their skirts. Full circle skirts is a task that is usually taught to first year fashion students, so know that behind my mask is a very proud smile for these KSC members.

They have also embraced this project with pre-loved bed sheets, their grandma’s fabric stash and crisp fresh cottons from the shops.

Well done girls!
