Last Day Memories

We have yet another epic roving reporter on our list - this story from the lovely Mrs Smith:

'After saying their farewells to the student body, the Year 12 students, along with Mr Meyer, Mr Spencer, and Mrs Smith, headed off to Meelup for a day of fun at the beach. Despite a few showers, we enjoyed a morning of SUPing, frisbee, beach walks and whale watching! We then had a sausage sizzle lunch, and a visit from Mr Maynard and Mr Arthur, and created a handprint canvas before reading our letters. We finished off the day with Simmo's ice-cream! A great day was had by all.'

Reflections from Year 7s

Mrs Langenhoven's Year 7 English students have been reflecting on their first year in Secondary School.  Some absolute gems have been unearthed, and here's a few for you to take in.  Try not to smile!

What has been something you have enjoyed about your first year in high school?

I love having such a variety of teachers and using lots of different rooms.
Having a locker, it is my own personal space!
The older kids are nice.
I like how organised everything is.
We have a whole two periods of sport!
There have been new subjects I have never tried before.
You get to choose a locker! But year 7's start at the bottom row.
The older kids are really nice and kind. I made friends with some straight away in form.
We have been able to try so many new things, design, cadets, woodwork, cooking, aviation and we have our own laptops!!
I like how organised everything is, you always know what is going on.
The teachers are calm and relatable.
The hat is smaller, I like that.
Everyone accepts you and welcomes you. It's not scary.

What advice would you give a year 6 student preparing to enter high school?

The transition is pretty easy, like getting a new puppy.
I was worried about going to high school but now I see I shouldn't have been.
Keep on top of your homework and be organised.
You don't need to worry and get stressed. The teachers take care of you.
Push through the hard stuff and believe in yourself.
Respect your teachers.
High school is amazing, work hard and make the most of it.
The teachers are there for you, in the highs and lows. They also try to make their lessons fun and interesting.

Well done, Year 7s.  We think you are a pretty wonderful group of students, and appreciate your take on what high school is really like.

Star GazingYear 5 Astronomy Night. Here's the report from Mr Meyerink:

'Last Monday the Year 5 class was lucky enough to have a night under the stars and celebrating God’s grand design! Man did we have a show ... clear skies, partial moon, the Scorpion in clear view, Saturn, Mars, Jupiter and more! To top it off we were blessed to also see shooting stars, the International space station (carrying 6 people on board) and to top it off Elon Musks' Satellite Train crossed straight above us. It was totally out of this world and we praise our Great God for an amazing night!

Not a lot of sleep was had, but a lot of fun and some great memories!'

Sounds awesome!

Across the Campus

As the Class of 2020 was completing their final full day on campus, amidst the tasks of clearing lockers and finalising paperwork, a special nostalgic morning tea was held.

As the first class that Mr Meyerink and Mrs Ackerman collectively taught in Year 6 in Primary School, it has been a cohort that has been especially meaningful. To celebrate the moment, Mr M and Mrs A hosted them for morning tea, with the intent of hearing where the students will head to from here. A lot has changed in these subsequent 6 years, and some fun reminiscing was special for everyone.

God bless you Class of 2020!

Primary Inter-school Athletics Carnival

Last week, the Primary students took part in their annual interschool athletics event, and it was a gorgeous day out.  Mr Meyerink captured these moments.

'A great effort from team Cornerstone ... Proud of all of them! Another great event and so good to be out competing against the best from other schools.'

Well done, everyone!  And thanks Mr Meyerink for your fabulous organisation of the event.

Masterchef, Cadets style.

Just in from Mr Cleaver:

Last week, two cadet groups faced off in a Masterchef Challenge. Each group had 60 minutes to setup their outdoor kitchen and cook a main and dessert from random ingredients. The flavours were excellent though one dish did “a-salt” the senses. Here are some pictures on the students and their food.

Fantastic!

Writing Win

Congratulations to Lucy Marden and Tessa Schifferli, who placed 2nd in the 2020 CBCA writing competition! Their story "Home" placed in the silver position in the Year 7 to 8 bracket. Congratulations to these two gifted young writers - both of whom are regular contributors to the College newsletter in our Junior Journo's segment.

Well done, ladies!

Lunchtime Laughter

The library is a popular place for our students, and at lunch-time, there's even more reasons to love it. Here's a few photos of students enjoying the space. We love that Mrs Mapstone is making this part of the College so welcoming for pupils to enjoy.

Design Applications

The Year 9 Design class have been developing App prototypes using Adobe XD. Mr Tink gathered these few examples together to share with us.

If you click on the below links, you should be able to view and click through their App. Please note that some pages allow scrolling. These prototypes sometimes cannot be viewed on mobile devices.

Great work guys!

Movie Character Day

Today is Movie Character Day in the Secondary School, and some pretty amazing costumes are on display. From the Wizard or Oz to Star Wars, from Napoleon Dynamite to Shaun the Sheep - safe to say there was a lot to see.

The prizes were distributed by Form, then by Individuals and then by Groups.

Congratulations to all those recognized.  The most significant prizes (which included bags of Freddo Frogs) went to Hope Adams who was dressed as a character from Legally Blonde, and some of the Year 10 cohort as Star Wars.  Special mention must be made of the inventive use of cinnamon buns for the hair buns of Princess Leia.

Well done, everyone!

Surveying the Oval

Last week, Mr Jones' Mathematics class had a special guest. Dale Johnson, a licenced surveyor, came to the school and demonstrated real-life application of mathematics for the Year 11 Mathematics Applications students.

Together, they placed three survey pegs around the oval, and using tripods and computer equipment were able to demonstrate the application of trigonometry.  In particular the sine and cosine rule used to calculate distances between points and angles between sides and also the area for any triangle.

Thanks Mr Johnson for visiting - we appreciated your professional input into the students' learning.

Student Council 2021

The Secondary Student Council is made up of student representatives across all the houses, and they gather regularly to share what is unfolding in their particular form, and to inspire each other to collaborate for greater outcomes.

This week, Mrs Wright provided some lunch for the councillors, and they were joined by key teachers to hear what was unfolding across the Secondary School.

We are grateful for the budding leaders we have at Cornerstone.
