Kitchen and Garden Update

Kitchen and Garden News
- We have a limited amount of tomato sauce and tomato relish for sale this term. Keep an eye out for order forms coming home in the next couple of weeks.
- A limited amount of organically grown garlic from the Surfside garden will also be available for sale soon, as well as heirloom tomato seedlings!
- Thank you to all families who attended the weekend garden working bee a few weeks ago. We were restricted to 10 people in the garden at a time, but managed to clear a lot of overgrown plots, and the garden is now looking much calmer, ready for summer planting.
In the Kitchen this term...
Year 3 and Year 5 have been super enthusiastic learners this term, finally getting their turn in the Kitchen and Garden program for this year. We do have to abide by Covid restrictions which means only cooking our individual portions of food to taste. We have made individual mini pizzas, mini frittatas with fresh garden greens and eggs, jam drop biscuits, and baked potatoes with hommus and garden toppings. See the recipes below! It has been so encouraging to see students trying new foods for the first time.
We have been learning or refreshing safe knife skills, kitchen hygiene practices, and of course how to do the dishes. Another focus this term has been sustainability practices, including waste sorting and ways we can repurpose or reuse items.
In the Garden...
Year 3 have been learning essential garden skills and safety, practicing using tools, wheelbarrows, and even learning how to roll up a pair of garden gloves. We also planted sunflower seeds that each student took home, hopefully some of these are starting to grow!
Year 5 harvested our amazing garlic crop, and a huge amount of broad beans. We started to plant out our summer seedlings, such as zucchinis. Tomatoes will go in soon too! Fingers crossed for a bumper harvest in Term 1 next year.
