Ourschool Industry Insights Session #3 with guest speakers from Multiplex

Laying the foundations

Ourschool hosted their third (and final) Industry Insights Session with an enthusiastic panel of five employees of the global construction company, Multiplex. The session was aimed at Year 10 students seeking careers in the building and construction industry and it didn’t disappoint! For students at NGSC to have access to such informed and engaging individuals, explaining their day-to-day work, and identifying different jobs that support those ‘on the tools’ e.g. Finance, IT and HR, was a genuine privilege. The speakers also provided insight into TAFE courses, urged students to ask for help and encouraged them to embrace city and interstate opportunities. It was also an opportunity for students at NGSC to hear about women working in the industry and learn about what a cadetship is and key terminology such as, 'tender'. Our students are better off learning the specifics to truly understand the industry.

If you missed viewing one of the live streams, why not access the recording?

Given some students and classes missed out on viewing one of the three livestreams, Ourschool has made a recording of each session available to the NGSC community until the end of Term 4.

Staff are welcome to show the session to their classes, whilst students (and parents) interested in the aforementioned topics and pathways are encouraged to contact me via email (alumni@ngsc.com.au) for the link and password to the recorded sessions.

I look forward to hearing from you!

‘Trade talks’ with 2018 NGSC Alumnus, Daniel Nouwen and 2014 MFGSC Alumna Jasmine Anderson

To theme the Industry Insights session with Multiplex and to shine a spotlight on various trades, Ourschool Alumni Program Manager, Tanja Dunat Timms chats with two public school graduates and local tradies, Daniel Nouwen and Jasmine Anderson.

Daniel Nouwen graduated from North Geelong Secondary College in 2018 and is currently in his third year as an apprentice Boiler Maker, working at Thorntons.

In the Q&A, Daniel attributes his initial interest in pursuing a career in the metal fabrication trade, to his father, who is a Fitter and Turner. Daniel thought that, he too, would become a Fitter, however, whilst completing a Certificate 2 in Engineering Studies during his VCE, Daniel came across an opening to complete an apprenticeship, as a Boilermaker with Thorntons, at the completion of his Secondary School studies, which he quickly snapped up! Although he didn’t realise at the time, completing a Certificate 2 in Engineering Studies, did not only give Daniel insight into his apprenticeship, but it also put him in good stead, effectively ‘knocking off’ a whole year off his apprenticeship.

Daniel speaks about some of the specific skills that are in high demand in the metal fabrication industry, namely, welding and the importance of soft skills, such as team work and communication, and how refining these skills can put you a cut above the rest when it comes to job opportunities and career advancements.

Jasmine Anderson, Matthew Flinders Girls’ Secondary College alumna from the Class of 2014, has always been fascinated by bricks (in the form of lego as a child) and was particularly interested in how bricks were stuck to one another. Encouraged by her Careers Coordinator in Year 10 to undertake a pre-apprenticeship in bricklaying, cemented (excuse the pun!) the idea that this, perhaps, was something she wanted to do as a career.

Jasmine is proud to be a female tradie and is certainly not afraid of hard work; laying bricks, labouring: mixing mud, setting scaffolding, loading runs and cutting bricks are some of the daily tasks she undertakes. Although bricklaying itself is quite repetitive, Jasmine enjoys the variety of jobs she has the opportunity to work on: fireplaces, nursing homes, houses, fences, to name a few.

Head to the NGSC Alumni Facebook Page to watch the full Q&A. The video will also be available soon on the College Website under the Alumni tab.
