Around The Primary

Dear Parents

We have had a very busy two weeks around the Primary school. Last Friday the whole school gathered together to celebrate Mass with Fr Rodrigo. We were so proud of our young students for reading so confidently in front of the large congregation. It was also wonderful to see the Primary Singers alongside the Secondary Choir leading the singing throughout the liturgy.

These prayerful times are an important part of building our community and celebrating that we are all part of God's family.

Our Year 4-6 students have certainly made a big splash by taking part in swimming lessons and swimming trials. It was very pleasing that 30 students took part in our after-school swimming training this week. Under the guidance of qualified coaches from UniSwim and Mr Alderman, our students enjoyed the opportunity to display their skills in the College pool and put in a fantastic effort at their first week of training sessions.

The teachers are now finalising preparations for the Parent Information Evenings next week. This is an important time whereby you have the opportunity to listen to your child's teacher outline their program and procedures for this school year. I encourage all families to be represented at the Parent Information evenings next week (see below for specific meeting dates/times).

Our first Primary Mass will be on Ash Wednesday, 6 March at 9:15am. Ms Cooney and Mrs Haydon and the Year 3G students are preparing the readings, prayers and songs. All parents and grandparents are invited to join us in the Chapel.

I'm looking forward to seeing many families at our Primary Picnic next Saturday 23 February.

Kind regards,

Antoinette De Pinto

COUNSELLOR CORNER

Keeping Safe - Child Protection Curriculum

As of January 1, 2017, the new registration standards and other requirements for Non-Government Schools Subsection (12.1e) requires the “delivery to all students of a developmentally appropriate protective behaviours curriculum, developed by experts in child abuse prevention, and covering what the boundaries are between appropriate and inappropriate interactions and when, how and who to tell when a boundary is crossed…

All Primary staff at John XXIII College are trained in the delivery of the Keeping Safe : Child Protection Curriculum. The KS:CPC is an evidence based, best practice curriculum developed collaboratively with child protection experts, teachers, educational leaders and other professionals. It will be taught across the Primary school in Years K-6 throughout the year as it was last year.

The KS:CPC is based on two main themes which are presented through topics and activities of increasing complexity. The two KS:CPC Themes are:

  • Theme 1: We all have the right to be safe
  • Theme 2: We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust.

The two KS:CPC Themes are explored through four Focus Areas, which are examined in growing complexity in accordance with the age of the students. The four KS:CPC Focus Areas are:

  • Focus Area 1: The right to be safe
  • Focus Area 2: Relationships
  • Focus Area 3: Recognising and reporting abuse
  • Focus Area 4: Protective strategies

The focus area 'The Right to be Safe' will be covered  in Term 1. Information will be provided in the newsletter for parents on the topics that will be covered. If you have any queries or concerns about the program please contact the Primary Counsellor Anne Murphy on

(08)9383 0469 or by email; murphy.anne@cewa.edu.au
