Enhancement & Enrichment

There has been much work going on behind the scenes at GEC for Enhancement and Enrichment. In terms of curriculum and pedagogy, the staff SEAL Professional Learning Team has worked with the students and teachers of SEAL classes to reflect on our teaching practice, and critically analyse through the lens of current educational research how we can further challenge our students using high-impact teaching strategies. This will be continued this semester as we continually strive to enrich and extend our students’ learning opportunities.

The Languages faculty has also developed a conceptual curriculum for most units of Years 7-10 French, which gives more room to further enrich our students’ language learning experience, whether in the Immersion program or mainstream Language. This conceptual curriculum ensures that our students are able to not only relate their language learning to the real world, but also broaden and develop their intercultural awareness and ability.

Students have been partaking successfully in many enhancement and enrichment opportunities. Our debating teams had a successful season, with wins against Wesley, Caulfield Grammar, and Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School. Junior debating will be starting  in the middle of the term. In the Junior School, several students participated in the DAV Junior Public Speaking competition. They performed admirably, with Aimee Harris (8A) gaining a Honourable Mention and Tess Keogh (7B) advancing through to the State semi-finals at St. Bede’s College.

Furthermore, four junior students competed in the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Regional Final at Kilvington Grammar, with Sharon Mascarenhas (9B) achieving a Special Mention.

Within the Senior School, we had two teams represent the College at the Model United Nations competition at McKinnon Secondary College. They spoke incredibly well, and their comprehensive knowledge of global political issues was evident. More enrichment opportunities are coming up, with the Monash University Asian Studies Debate approaching and other opportunities and partnerships.
