Library Corner

Term 3 started with plenty of excitement in the Library, as we were lucky enough to have young adult authors Will Kostakis and Danielle Binks visit the Book Club to discuss their latest books, answer questions and chat about all things #LoveOzYA. The students were enthralled with Will’s hilarious stories of having his first book published while completing his VCE, and Danielle’s sage advice for budding young writers. The authors also spoke about the importance of reading diversely, which is something we have been focusing on in Book Club this year.

The Melbourne Writers’ Festival program was recently announced, with plenty of incredible Australian and international authors involved. The Book Club will be attending the schools program in late August, but I also encourage everyone to check out the schedule online and attend some of the amazing events if possible. There are many aimed at teens (including a keynote by one of the most popular YA authors in the world right now: Angie Thomas) and several of the events are free.

In other local book news, the first ever Readings Young Adult Book Prize was awarded to Zana Fraillon for her powerful and compassionate refugee story The Bone Sparrow. We have copies of all the shortlisted books available in the Library, as well as longlisted books for the upcoming Inky Awards and CBCA Book of the Year.

Later this term we’ll celebrate Book Week with several events run by the Library Monitors, including a book-themed debate, picture book-making and a lunchtime book trivia. There will also be visits from authors Melissa Keil, Leanne Hall and Cath Crowley, and our very own Glen Eira College Writers’ Festival with various writing workshops and events taking place over the week.
