Australian Olympic Committee Presents the Pierre de Coubertin Award to Sierra Danon

On International Olympic Day, 188 Victorian Senior Secondary School students and State Sport Association athletes were acknowledged with the prestigious Pierre de Coubertin Award.

Named after the founder of the Modern Olympic Games, the Pierre de Coubertin Award recognises students who demonstrate academic excellence and sporting prowess whilst exemplifying the Olympic values. Each award recipient must participate in sport and display the Olympic values, in particular, good sportsmanship.

As part of the nomination each student submitted a literary, artistic or digital piece to this year’s theme: “Which Rio 2016 Olympic Games moment has had the biggest impact on you?”

Congratulations to Sierra Danon who won the Most Outstanding Artistic Piece - a wonderful and inspiring achievement.

Adam Golding, Health and Physical Education Leader, noted Sierra as “displaying terrific leadership qualities since her time at the College. She is willing to give up her own time to help coach interschool sports teams during lunch time and after school. Sierra shows amazing sportsmanship that every student at our school should look up to; encouraging and supporting her opposition, giving her very best when she is pitching in the State Softball Competition or smashing an overhead volley in regional badminton. She epitomises the true qualities that the Pierre de Coubertin Award represents.”

Welcome to our new staff and students

Welcome to the 26 new students who have joined our College this term and the 40 plus new students in the English Language Centre. I am pleased to welcome the following staff this semester: our new receptionist Kelli Lawson,  Tori Wood, voice teacher and Charlene Wijaya, piano teacher; Brenton Hale replacing Deborah Cordingley for 12 months;  Gary Bottomley   replacing Lou Tsarpalas for term 3 and  Georgette Pontikis  replacing Tina Boutselis for term 3.

This year’s mid-year awards assemblies were, again, a wonderful celebration of our students’ success. Thank you to the parents and friends who were able to attend.

Sister School Visit

26 students had a wonderful time in New Caledonia in the holidays.  Thank you to Erin Cavanagh for the huge amount of work involved in coordinating an overseas trip for students.

Thank you to the 22 families who hosted our 24 excited students from New Caledonia.  The students really had a wonderful time and have forged many new friendships.  We look forward to further developing our relationship with Collège de Dumbea-Sur-Mer in New Caledonia.

Work Experience

In the last week of term our Year 10 students participated in a week of work experience. Thank you to Carol McCaskie for coordinating this program and to the staff who visited the students in their workplaces. This program would not occur without the generous employers who gave of their time and experience to support these young people.

Fame Junior – 2017 School Production

I cannot count the number of hours staff and students have contributed so far in preparation for this year’s school production – Fame Junior.  Having seen a couple of numbers from the show I know it is going to be an outstanding show.  Well done to everyone involved.  I hope to see you at one of the performances.

Unclaimed Lost Property

There are still many items of unnamed lost property in our lost property basket - shoes, shorts, jumpers, jackets etc. As the items are unnamed we are unable to return the items to the rightful owner. Please assist by naming every item of clothing, including shoes.

Capital Works Update

We are delighted to have moved in to the ground floor arts, physics, robotics, digital media and tech rooms. This includes a new student entrance to the building.  These new spaces have been very well received by students and staff. The façade of the school has had quite a face lift which is just about completed.  Work is proceeding extremely well in the gym and in the next four science rooms and second food tech room.  We have also received some concept designs for landscaping including opening up the area along the back of the school to students and a new bike parking area.  We hope to get some images on the school website soon.
