Science News

It’s been a heavy week with all Year levels finalising their summative assessments with their end of year examinations.  I am sure students took advantage of their study lists to do extensive study and perform well. This will be an indication of how well they have built their brains this year.

A new teacher on staff, Mrs Denise Depaoli, has been busy helping build the resources in the science department.   She has this to say:

“Marian Catholic College will now be part of the national Seismometer in Schools program (First and only school in Griffith to have a professional grade working seismometer permanently installed!). The school will be part of Australia’s earthquake observing network and our students will be the first to hear about an earthquake before the news and be able to look up their seismograph to see how it moved the earth.

Dr Michelle Salmon from Australian National University, Canberra will be installing the seismometer in December and will speak to our students about Earthquakes and how they rock our world”

Year 7 will attend Altina Wildlife Park next week Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd November. They will need to pack a lunch and bring a hat, sunscreen and water for the day.  It was wonderful to see the Year 7 students for 2019 visiting and enjoying the activities across the different faculties and becoming familiar with the lay of the land.  We look forward to having the opportunity to help build their brains in Science.

The year 12 studies are well underway for the 2019 HSC.  This year we have Science Extension students in a 1 Unit HSC course, which is very exciting. These students will undertake an independent study from their own interests. They will design, develop and report on their study as well as doing an online assessment test for their HSC.  We wish them every success.

Best wishes for the HSC students as they enjoy their Graduation Ball and look forward to their results.  Best wishes to all students as they come to the end of their 2018 school year and I hope they are able to reflect over their learning and their experiences with a smile and in a very positive way.

Regards

Mrs Dumbleton (Leader of Learning, Science)
