MCC Berg Shield Cricket Team

Beginning in November the MCC Berg Shield cricket team took part in the Catholic statewide knockout competition.

Round 1  & 2   Waggga Wagga 7th November: With rain shortening the games to 15 overs a piece before a ball had been bowled, it didn’t seem to affect the Marian boys. Sending St. Francis into bat, the boys worked well together in the field to restrict them to 4/70 off their 15 overs. James Roche was the pick of the bowlers taking 2/13 with support from Sam Irvin 1/8. The Marian boys made light work of the total chasing it down within 10 overs with the loss of only two wickets, Hayden Forner finished 36 not out.

Marian then faced Kildare College winning against Mater Dei College earlier in the day. After again winning the toss and sending them in to bat, Kildare threatened to get away on a number of occasions but were hampered by the continued loss of wickets. With Roche 2/20 the chief wicket taker and a wicket each to Jacob Testoni, Hayden Forner and Nate McGregor, Marian were able to hold them to 5/93 from their allotted overs. In reply Roche and Forner got the total to 46 before Forner (20) was the first wicket to go. Aditha Jayasuriya joined Roche and the pair continued to score with ease, the game was pretty much in the bag when Jayasuriya departed and McGregor came out to hit the winning runs with 2 over to spare. Special mention to James Roche who finished the game 50 not out.   Marian Catholic College finished the day as Diocesan Champions.

Round 3  Marian will now take on Hennessy College Young in round 3 of the Berg Shield competition.

MCC Boys battle bravely

Last Monday the MCC Open Boys Cricket side put up a brave fight, only to be defeated by St Francis

by 98 runs.

Losing the toss, the Marian boys were forced to field first, amidst an outfield that was patchy and

inconsistent to say the least.

Despite the rough conditions, it was a promising start for the Home team, creating three chances in

the opening ten overs. Unfortunately though, MCC could not capitalise on these opportunities, and

were left ruing their dropped chances.

Captain Connor Bock led from the front with the ball, claiming two wickets, combining with Isaac

Testoni (2/40) to have St Francis in trouble midway through the first session. However, several

strong partnerships through the middle overs led to St Francis reaching 173 before Nick Zappala

(2/18) and Hayden Forner (2/17) cleaned up the tail. Aditha Jayasuriya was the star in the field

claiming three solid catches.

In response, Marian started strongly thanks to brave innings from Hayden Forner and James Roche,

two year seven and eight students who blunted the Senior student rich St Francis bowling attack.

And when Aditha Jayasuriya and Skipper Bock also chipped in with handy contributions, the MCC

boys had launched a powerful platform at 2/49 after 15 overs. However, with a need to lift the run

rate and with rain looming overhead, wickets began to tumble, the brave MCC resistance ending

after 26 overs. Towards the end of the innings, Nate McGregor batted well to defy the St Francis

attack, remaining undefeated at the close.

It was a courageous effort from a side containing no less than 6 of their 12 members from Years 7-9,

especially considering they were playing primarily against Year 10 and Year 11 students in an Opens

match.

The game was played in great spirits, with both sides donning black armbands out of respect for the

recent tragedy in Leeton.

Junior Basketball Championships 2018

On the 12th and 13th of November Marian Catholic College sent the Junior Boys Basketball team to compete in the NSWCCC Basketball tournament held in Sydney at Penrith’s Basketball stadium. Against a plate of fierce squads, the boys dug deep and managed to secure a twenty four point win over St Andrew’s Marayong. Although the competition was unrelenting, the boys came together, played as one and fought for every basket made.

This sense of team spirit allowed the boys to represent the college well. With stand out players such as Jacob Testoni, who continuously powered forward to secure many points to his name, to Anthony Catanzariti’s staggering three point shooting ability; with Zac Dal Broi's speed and agility, Lachlan Chant and Riley Gatto’s powerful lay-ups and defensive stances, and Patty Agresta’s phenomenal heart amongst opponents much larger than he.

The boys played with inspirational heart and sportsmanship, the likes of which Marian-- in regards to its Basketball reputation--has not seen for a while. Sadly, the boys fell short, but held their own against some pretty formidable teams. Well done boys, you’ve done Marian proud.

Girls Rugby 7's

Recently a number of girls from Marian Catholic College took part in the Next Gen Super 7s Rugby series where they represented Southern Inland in tournaments played in Canberra, Yass and Wagga. The teams coached by Year 11 student Matt Parisotto featured Ma’ata Alai-Lokeni in the Under 16s side, along with Alex Parisotto and Sophia Kelsey in the Under 14s side. Year 9 student Louisa Tuiaki also donned the jersey in the last tournament of the series played in Wagga. While the Under 16s side did not enjoy too much success on the field, the Under 14 side took won both tournament’s in Yass and in Wagga.

This was an amazing achievement considering the side only came together after a Try Tackle program run by the Brumbies six weeks ago. To cap the tournament off,  Alex Parisotto was awarded the player of the final following Southern Inland’s 24-15 win over the Far South Coast Falcons.
