Magis

Congratulations to all Magis students who received awards at Presentation Night. It was wonderful to see our 2019 Magis captain Rory Hewson receive the award as Dux of the College. Rory’s leadership has exemplified the best of the Magis philosophy. In additional to his splendid academic performance he has represented the College with great distinction in debating, in which he has twice been selected in the Jesuit National team, public speaking, Mock Trials, and Mooting, in which  the John XXIII College team won the WA Championship.  Rory’s team-mates in debating, mock trials and mooting were Year 12 Magis leaders Charlie Richards and Cullen Binet. What an example they have set for other Magis students, and it is gratifying that we will have a strong Magis Year 12 leadership team of Ben Linsten (Magis captain), Lorian Marshall, Alex Panther and Nick Brennan in 2020.

News came in this week that our Year 9 Quest team of Bella Boley, Charlotte Moody and Sophie Baron-Hay achieved  third place in the Years 7-10 section of this excellent competition held at UWA recently.  Congratulations to the girls and special thanks to Deacon Aaron Peters and Mrs Shannon Allen who assisted the girls on  the two competition days.

The Year 7 Magis Personal Project Exhibition held recently featured many outstanding works. The Award for best project was shared by Xavier Jeffreys and Hunter Giles-Shanley, with Alejandra Recinos-MacLennan and Maya Mintz equal third. Best Process Journal Award went to Gemma Bailey just ahead of Meg Derbyshire, Xavier Jeffreys and Alejandra Recinos-MacLennan. Nicholas Silva and Jacob Davila also gained very high scores from the project and journal combined. Special thanks to judges Mrs Lorraine Holmes  and Ms Kirralee Dawson, and our outstanding Year 10 Magis leaders Caitlin Green, Grace Barbour and Skye MacMillan who completed the Personal Project adjudication team.

The 48 page Magis Chronicle is now available free in PDF form, and this glossy hard-cover book is being printed and may be ordered by emailing me. It contains reports on the wide range of Magis competitions and events for the year, and more than 100 photos.  The World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions Yale Tour pictorial report was also distributed this week.  Students can download copies of both of these, as well as the ten-minute Magis 2019 Highlights Video.
