Learning and Teaching

This term we are excited to have our learning for our Integrated Unit steeped in the tradition of History.

Junior Classes

Our big concept for the students in the Junior classes  is based around our ‘Families and Celebrations', something both near and dear to us all.

The students are going to be learning about their own family history. They are going to learn who the people in their family are, in particular where they were born and raised, how they relate to each other and most importantly how they communicate and share these stories.

The students will also be taught how to find out more information about the history related to their immediate family unit.

The students will learn more about the traditions of their favourite family celebration and what makes an event special and important to them. They will then be able to create questions to gather information from home about their family history.

Students will have the opportunity to use a special artefact or photo of the event to help them share information about the significant event.

This will be shared in an Oral Language Presentation to their peers towards the end of the term.

Middle Classes

The students in our Middle School will be learning all about Australian History including both Settlement and Indigenous perspectives over a range of concepts.

They will be able to explain how and why life changed in the past and identity aspects of the past that still remain the same. The students will then be able to describe the experiences and perspectives of both an individual and a group over time.

Most importantly, they will learn to recognise the significance of events in bringing about change. They will be able to sequence events and people in chronological order to identify key dates, causes and effects using multiple sources of information related to this.

Students will learn how to describe the perspectives of others and their point of view to show change using Historical terms and ideas.

Senior Classes

The students in the Senior Classes will be studying colonial Australia in the 1800’s and the development of Australia as a nation.

They will learn about what life was like for the different groups during this time and explore the factors that led to Federation.

The students will begin to understand the significance of Australia's British heritage and other models that influenced our system of government.  They will also learn about the way of life of people who migrated to Australia and the contributions they brought to Australia being both economically and socially.

Keep an eye out for some photos of the students learning in class in the next newsletter.
