National Science Week

Last week we celebrated National Science Week. This yearly celebration of science and technology aims to encourage an interest in science pursuits among students and to encourage them to be fascinated by the world we live in.

Across our Primary classes we celebrated National Science Week with excursions, engaging classroom experiments and investigations.

Long Day Care

Long Day Care have been participating in different science experiments and the children have been learning about a night sky in our "dark room". We will continue learning more about science in Term 3. The Long Day Care children have drawn pictures of what they would like to learn about.

After School Care

We have a Gardening Club within our After School Program and last week our students went on an adventure to find worms.

Year 4

Year 4 has been looking at how the weather can affect the Earth’s surface.  During our science lesson we looked at how weathering over time affects landforms and impacts on them over time.

Year 5 - Festival of the Bright Ideas

Last Friday, both Year 5 classes went on an excursion to the Festival of Bright Ideas at Princes Wharf 1.   First up we split up into our classes and went off to different stations around the Festival.  Year 5 White had the opportunity to learn about the zooarchaeology of many different animals including an emu leg, dugong spine and a snake jaw. They also had the chance to learn about edible and native plants in Tasmania and how the First Nations people prepared these edible plants and how we can also use them in everyday foods. The girls also learnt how to dissect a fish and what parts of the fish are edible and how to tell if the fish is a female or a male and how old it is.

Whilst this was going on, Year 5 Navy rotated through stations exploring sound and making kazoos, visited the Dominic College animal husbandry stall, explored the impact of chemical reaction on cabbage leaves and then flew a drone over a map of Hobart, landing on certain colonies of animals.  We then came back together and worked with staff from the CSIRO and the Antarctic Division looking at the different animals that live on the seafloor and talked about a giant camera that is dragged behind The Investigator (a research ship).  We also had loads of fun using the VR Headset as we had a virtual tour of The Investigator.

At the conclusion of the excursion the Year 5 classes came together and met with a chemist from the University of Tasmania who demonstrated different chemistry molecules in everyday things such as sand, bananas or plastic bottles.

Thank you to Mrs Aimee Woodward who organised this experience, it was a great way to celebrate Science Week.
