Mission and Identity

Last week began a series of Class masses in the Chapel at Mount Carmel. Our College Chaplain, Fr. Shammi Perera, will visit regularly over the coming weeks to conduct mass, explain what happens during the service, and to give a perspective on the Catholic relationship with God. We welcome Fr. Shammi and thank him for coming in.
Year 10 students have ventured down to Lambert Park to do some EarthCare to a part of the park that Mount Carmel has "adopted". The work involved weeding, planting, and protecting native plants that are growing there. The girls were able to see the progress of trees that were planted by students two years ago, and leave their own legacy in the area.
There has been plenty of action in the Food Studies Room at school as students from Years 9-10 gather at lunchtime to cook up soup and biscuits for Loui's Van. This initiative of the Mission Sisters is a contribution that helps feed the homeless and poor of Hobart and gives the students a practical way of lending assistance.
Reconciliation Week Breakfast
Mount Carmel College was represented at the rescheduled Reconciliation Week Breakfast by students, Bronte Johnston and Heidi Preshaw and staff members, Mrs Sharon Himson and Mr Anthony Chapman on Friday 13 August. The guest speaker was Professor Marcia Langdon AO. She spoke of her role in the Empowerment Communities Project and as a member of the Expert Panel on Constitutional Recognition of Indigenous Australians. Attendees also heard of the local project to build a Colonial Era Conflicts Memorial in Hobart and the new initiative in creating a Reconciliation Collective to build connections with First Nations Communities and experts.
