Year 10 Work Experience

During last term's Careers Experience Week, our students experienced diverse work environments and industries, such as CSL Behring, a biopharmaceutical company.

Located in Parkville and Broadmeadows, CSL Behring manufactures a range of medicines including immunotherapy products made from blood plasma (the 'yellow' part of donated blood), and vaccines for flu and COVID.  One of our Year 10 students was lucky enough to see this 'science in action' as part of her Work Experience program.

From June 21 – 25 I got to partake in the Work Experience Program. I was fortunate to get a placement at CSL Behring, where they are currently making the COVID vaccine, AstraZeneca. I was able to view many different processes and job opportunities that are present in a pharmaceutical environment.

During my work experience, I was able to speak with many managers, Engineers, Planners, Scientists Lab Technicians and technical staff such as Instrumentation Technicians and Electricians.  I was also able to understand the different medicines made there and the processes involving the plasma such as the Privigen and Alburex.

I learnt what they test using different instruments such as pressure, temperature, flow, pH, tability and conductivity. I also understood how to do calibrations on machinery. I used luxmeters, voltmeters and was able to set up pressure/ temperature calibrators using probes. I was able to understand how pressure relief valves worked, MCMs and saw the control room which controlled parts of the plant. It was amazing to see the different water handling and air pressure plants such as the effluent treatment plant.

Overall, I would definitely recommend going on work experience because it showed me what the workplace was like and gave me an insight into this specific field

Snap Lockdowns: Adding stress to the stressed

The senior years of secondary college are typically the high point of a student’s high school career and are ones filled with milestone experiences.  One of the most stressful aspects of reoccurring lockdowns is not knowing.  Will I get that last shot at a football championship?  Will I get another chance to perform in a college musical concert?  Will we have our Year 12 Formal?

We understand how disappointing this latest snap lockdown might be for many of you.  The Department of Education and Training recognises the additional stressors placed on our senior students during lockdowns and have prepared a series of resources based on feedback from school captains.
