Sports Round-Up

Although we were only back at school for a few days in between lockdown 5 and 6 we have managed to squeeze in a fair bit of sport in that time!

EMR Senior Boys Basketball

On Tuesday the 3rd of August we sent out two teams to represent Doncaster Secondary College at the Eastern metropolitan region competition.

Our Senior Boys’ basketball team played at Dandenong basketball stadium with Mr Adam Knott as their coach.  In our first game, we competed against Box Hill Senior Secondary College who have a highly successful basketball program. Unfortunately, their depth of talent was too strong for us and they beat us by 12 points.

In our second game, we found our identity again against Fairhills SC and were able to win by 38 points. In our remaining game, we played Templestowe College and won by 2 points on the buzzer from a sideline play! Unfortunately, due to dropping one game, we did not make it to the Grand Final.

Well done to the six Yr 12 students who played in the tournament, our school community are very proud of the way that you conducted yourselves on and off the court.  Mr Knott and the boys have represented the college in many basketball competitions together over the last 6 years at the college, this was their last competition together.

EMR Intermediate Boys Soccer

The Intermediate Boys Soccer Team participated in the Eastern Region Finals on Tuesday 3rd August at Darebin Sports Complex, accompanied by Mr Eugene Pring. The nerves were showing in the first game of the day against East Doncaster, however, the boys managed to come from behind on two occasions to secure a really important 2 - 2 draw.

The boys then faced Rowville, who were picked as one of the favourites to take out the title. Despite our boys dominating the first half it was still locked at 0 - 0. Rowville made the most of a counter attack early in the second half to go 1 - 0 up but we soon equalised from a Jordan Daniele free kick. It looked like we were destined for our second draw of the day, however with a minute to go Peter Berdenis sent the ball into the back of the net to register a memorable victory!

The boys confidence was up going into their last pool game of the day and they used this to their advantage to secure a comfortable victory against Auburn. Our two wins and a draw was enough to book a spot in the final against Mount Waverley. The majority of the final was played in the middle of the pitch with both teams defending well. Although we probably had more chances throughout the game, it was Mount Waverley that managed to sneak a header into the side netting for a 1 - 0 victory.

Despite the loss in the final, I am extremely proud of our boys for the effort resilience they showed throughout the day. Best Players: Luke Pickett, Zack Puhalovich, Pete Mathios, Anthony Laruffa and Jeorgie Vouloumanos.

Year 7 Boys Soccer

On Thursday, our year 7 boys’ Soccer team and Mr Warren Halliday represented our college at the Eastern Metropolitan Region competition. This group of boys should be exceptionally proud of themselves, not only did they play well individually but they displayed the college values of respect, responsibility, teamwork and resilience.

Their first match against Koonung was won 4-0. The highlight of the day was their next match against Rowville Soccer Academy where they drew 2-2. For Doncaster to make the final they needed to win the next 6 -0, The game was again St Albans the boys played an exceptional game and won 8-0. In the final the score was 0-0 at the final whistle, to find a winner they went straight to penalties. Sadly, the Doncaster boys lost the penalty shootout 3-1.

They can be proud of their efforts how they conduct during the day, Well done.

Athletics

We also managed during our short time at school to run some try outs for our athletics team, students who made the team should be in the Division Athletics event on compass. Due to COVID and having to postpone the original date we are now hoping to hold the Division Athletics on the 3rd of September, this event is now at the Box Hill Athletics Track, students are still asked to make their own way to and from the event, if this is an issue please let Katharine Anderson know as soon as possible.

Another lockdown in Melbourne requires more flexibility from students, staff and parents around sport in term 3, please keep this in mind with up coming events as COVID restrictions have a big impact on our ability to hold sporting events. Please know we are doing our very best to hold as many sporting events as we can but sometimes there are things that prevent us or require us to change our original plans. Thank you again for your ongoing understanding and resilience.
