Kindy during lockdown!

Everyone knows that it’s tough learning from home, but Kindergarten has been doing an awesome job!

This term, we are looking at ‘How the World Works’ with a focus on Different Materials, Different Uses. We have been investigating what objects are made of and the properties of materials, how objects move and why it is important to use the right material for the right reason.

During remote learning, Kindergarten has been classifying materials based on their qualities and testing materials to see how they perform under different conditions. We have been very proud of the way Kindergarten have used their thinking and reasoning skills to answer questions and produce solutions to problems.

We definitely have some budding scientists in our midst!

We are so proud of you all.

BIGGEST Book Week ever!

Book Week 2021 officially starts on Saturday 21 August, but we haven’t let a pandemic dampen our enthusiasm!

On Friday 13 August we launched this year’s Book Week program with a video from St Greg’s Old Boy and children’s author, James Tedesco, along with loads of competitions and events for our students to become involved with stories and engage with authors and illustrators.

On Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th August our Years 4-6 students participated in their first Virtual author visit with Anna Ciddor, author/illustrator of the most recently released, “The boy who stepped through time”, along with various other young reader novels.

Anna and myself dressed in our Ancient Roman garb, discussed story inspiration, the importance of research and planning and finding stories in everyday life.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to ‘see and hear’ one another and ask Anna about her writing process, her tips and tricks for creating stories people will want to read and her passion for authentic research to create historically accurate fiction.

We even played an ancient Roman game with dice and another with stones!

I enjoyed meeting someone new even though it had to be virtually, listening to her answer all of our questions and being able to hear how she became an Author and what inspired her was very interesting. It was fun to be able to have that experience even though we are all stuck at home.” Kay-Lee, Year 4

“I really enjoyed this meeting from Anna because it's going to make the book even more interesting by knowing who the characters were based on and what the Author was thinking when writing this book.”

“While I was listening to Anna speak it made me think about all the possibilities that could happen in the story, like is the coffin the time machine? or How do Perry's parents not know he is missing?.” Fletcher, Year 6

Whilst there are also some surprise events still planned for our students working from home, each day of Book Week will be a celebration of authors and stories:

Tuesday, 22 August: Our Senior boys have a special storytime planned

Wednesday, 23 August: Years 3-6 will participate in a Virtual Author Visit with Coral Vass.

Thursday, 26 August: Our official Virtual Book Character Parade video will be published to our YouTube channel and all competition winners will be announced/drawn.

Friday, 27 August: St Greg’s Pyjama Day event in support of Marist Charities and The Pyjama Foundation. Wear your pyjamas all day!

This year is going to be our BIGGEST Book Week ever!
