National Science Week

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. It aims to provide an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of scientists, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) professionals, innovators, designers and entrepreneurs to the world of science.

The theme for National Science Week 2021 was Food: Different by Design and honors the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development.

Students in Grade 1 started the week with a PowerPoint Quiz that tested their general knowledge about Science Week and the important theme of sustainable food in the future.

Over the course of the week, a new science experiment was posted each day in the google classroom. Students enthusiastically participated in the tasks and it appears we have many budding scientists in the school!

All the experiments were related to food, with eggs featuring prominently in our investigations. Students had great fun seperating egg whites from the yolks, or making 'bouncy eggs' ... with permission from mum or dad of course!

They also enjoyed creating 'fireworks in a glass' and conducting stunning colour mixing experiments using lollies.

Jasper, and several other students were so inspired by the week they found their own experiments to conduct. Awesome effort year 1's!

Book Week 2021

Hot on the heels of National Science Week was the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week. The theme this year was 'Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds'.

Students started the week by dressing up as their favourite book character, while others wore a fancy hat in the google classroom. Here are some of the fantastic costumes  from the Junior School.

Students also had the opportunity to complete an activity each day related to the theme of Book Week. Designing and creating their own front cover appeared to be one of the favourites!

Since remote learning began Matilda from Grade 1 has had a different innovative hair accessory each day, and Book Week was no exception. The class so look forward to seeing what amazing creations Matilda and her  mum will come up with next!

Mrs Lee, Ms Crookes and Mrs Michalski have been blown away by the energy and enthusiasm shown by the students during remote learning. Keep up the outstanding work everyone. You should all be very proud of yourselves and your achievements,

I know your teachers certainly are!

Threatened Species Day

Does your child have a question (or five!) about Australian plants or wildlife? Questions like, how fast can a kangaroo hop, or why does the kookaburra laugh?

Then submit your questions to https://60z89eoo.paperform.co/

These questions and many others will be answered during the live FaceBook event by esteemed animal experts Professor Euan Ritchie, conservation biologist Dr Kylie Soanes and Nature Book Week Ambassador Dr Jen Martin.

The live event is part of National Threatened Species day, and is commemorated across the country on 7 September 2021 to raise awareness of plants and animals at risk of extinction.

Join the Facebook Live event on Tuesday 7 September at 1pm as the experts answer questions from kids.
