What’s been happening in Indonesia this week?
Some of our students have been in Indonesia with their families during the recent series of earthquakes and we are very glad that none of them were in the danger zone of Lombok, but they felt the strong tremors in Bali.
Indonesians have been celebrating two events recently. On Friday 17 August, there were celebrations all over Indonesia for Indonesian Independence Day. Schools participated in competitions and parades, communities had special events to celebrate their Independence from the Dutch, following World War 2.
Indonesians living in different parts of the world marked the day with flag raising ceremonies, including one in Federation Square.

Asian Games
The other big event in Indonesia, is the 18th Asian Games, held in the cities of Jakarta and Palembang. The opening ceremony was amazing and highlights can be viewed at the following link, including an amazing performance of the Ratoh Jaroe dance by 1600 dancers :
The President of Indonesia, Pak Joko Widodo, entered the Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta in spectacular fashion, in similar style to the entrance of Queen Elizabeth to the 2012 London Olympics, surprising the audience and then lighting the flame representing the spirit of the games.
