Student Services Garden

Tucked away behind Student Services is a hidden gem.  A garden area which is having a little life breathed into it by our Student Services and the Gardening Team (which is a group of students keen to exercise their own green thumbs around the school).

The space is going to be designed as a productive chill out area for students growing herbs and fresh produce to be enjoyed by all.

Edible Garden Grant

We secured the 2017 VSGA Maxicrop – Edible Garden Grant from the Victorian Schools Garden Awards for $500, which is incredible and will definitely help get some plants in the ground.

We have had a number of teachers offer assistance, but we do need more students to get involved.

The gardening team are going to focus on the small garden out the back of Student Services to begin with and then move onto bigger and better areas.   We would love donations regarding tools, gloves etc.

Home Economics

Our Home Economics team do weekly online shopping, that is delivered to our school once a week. This has meant that weekly, we have been receiving up to 40 plus plastic shopping bags every week!

In an effort to reduce this amount of soft plastics, the team is now using reusable green bags each week for their grocery deliveries.

  • All soft plastic collected from packaging are being taken back to the supermarket to their ‘Red Bin’ collection
  • All other recyclables are being collected for co-mingled recycling collected fortnightly
  • Kitchen scraps are being collected in each classroom and either composted or fed to chooks

The rubbish bins are now looking emptier each week!

Green Cups

If you haven’t seen the ABC’s War on Waste definitely check it out;

For those of you that have, you would have found out that due to the polyurethane lining in our beloved coffee cups they are NOT recyclable!

To all you caffeine lovers out there, I’m sure you can appreciate that the morning takeaway coffee on the way to work is a non-negotiable. But one of the shocking truth’s to our innocent morning coffee is, that annually we send over 1 billion coffee cups into landfill.

We are urging you as parents, teachers and students to think about your morning routine and look at how you can make a difference to the staggering number of cups that are wasted every day and every year!

Below are some links to just two of the suppliers of Keep Cups online. Reusable coffee cups that are fashionable, sustainable and sensible. These cups will take you one step closer to becoming a better citizen of the earth!
