New students and Transition 2017

We have a number of new students starting this semester. Welcome to you and your families. We look forward to seeing your growth as a young person and the contributions you will make to NGSC.

The placement forms for grade 6 students coming to NGSC 2017 are being processed. Further details about the enrolment process will be sent to successful families in August as per the Department transition timeline. If you know of families who are yet to decide on a secondary school for their grade 6 children, please make them aware that there are timelines used for the placement and enrolment processes. Interested families can contact the General Office for more information regarding enrolments, 5240 5800.

On Thursday, the annual Junior Leadership Breakfast was being held at NGSC. Our new Leading Teacher (acting) in Transitions and Pathways, Katina Astles, hosted the event with Andy Brittain (Vic Police) as the guest speaker. Andy and Komon Sochali (Year 11) spoke about the Kokoda trek they did last year and the impact on leadership that has come from that experience. Approximately 60 junior leaders from local and country primary schools attended with their Principals. Thank you to our student leaders who assisted on the morning.

Curriculum Day

The first of the curriculum days for this year was held on Tuesday 21 June. The focus was to use a range of student data and our own knowledge of students to build class and learner profiles. Literacy, Numeracy, EAL S levels and disability/learning difficulty data was provided by leaders in these areas. The data is used to inform the differentiation required in teaching and learning to support all students in the classroom. Further work was completed towards our implementation of the Victorian Curriculum in 2017. It was a productive day offering significant time for teachers to work collaboratively to improve teaching practice and curriculum documentation.

The next curriculum day is scheduled for 31 October.

Operation Newstart

Congratulations to Max Merrett, Year 9, who has successfully completed the Operation Newstart program this term. The program involves students from a number of schools spending four days a week as a group exploring various personal development areas and sometimes challenging their thoughts and capabilities. Well done Max!

Exams

From all accounts the manner in which our students completed their exams was excellent. Most students had revised and prepared appropriately for the exams, brought the correct materials with them and attentively completed each exam. Many students have received their exam results and these results will be available via the Parent Portal shortly.

Academic excellence awards for the senior students were acknowledged at the assembly on Wednesday this week. The junior students will be acknowledged for their academic excellence early in Term 3.

Final assessment results and Week 8 Progress Reports are also available on the Parent Portal. An AUSVELS summary report (years 7-10) or a Unit result report (VCE) will be uploaded to the ‘Reports and Letters’ section of the portal. If there are concerns about accessing the portal please contact the relevant Year Level Coordinator, Sub-school Manager or an Assistant Principal.

Please note that some assessment task results cannot be viewed until teachers reclassify the task on the system. This is to rectify a software issue recently identified to the reports team.

If you would like to be in included in a focus group regarding the college reports and the parent portal, please contact Brad Headlam, Assistant Principal, 5240 5800.

Uniform

This is a reminder to all parents and carers that the holidays provide an excellent opportunity in which to address any uniform issues. For example, a number of girls were issued with a letter regarding the length of their school dress or skirt. The skirt must be worn at knee length and the dress no more than 8cm above the knee. Also, some students have broken or ill-fitting shoes or do not have a jumper or jacket. Note that leggings are not part of the school sports uniform and are not to be worn at school; the policy states that for PE/Sports only school shorts and track pants can be worn, these are available from Bellarine Uniforms. These issues have a time limit on them being fixed. For many students it is the start of Term 3. Please check the Uniform Policy on the school website and in the student diary. For assistance with the uniform please contact the relevant Year level Coordinator or the Wellbeing Office.
