NAIDOC Week events
NAIDOC Week events, scheduled for the last week of Term 2, were postponed due to a short COVID lockdown in Perth. Since July, the College has found other opportunities to celebrate these events.
This week we welcomed to the College Mr Alton Walley, a Whadjuk, Wilman, Kaneang Nyoongar storyteller, performing artist, writer and filmmaker, to reflect with Secondary students on the 2021 theme, ‘Heal Country’, beginning with the question: ‘What is Country?’
In his talk, Alton Walley shared many facets of ‘Country’, including the rhythm of the six-season Nyoongar cycle. He also provided some insight into the wisdom of traditional owners whose relationships, conversations, morality, laws and customs are encompassed in ‘Country’.
In the 2021 journey towards Healing Country, Alton Walley gave us much to think about!

Year 7 Social
Last Thursday 9 September, 173 Year 7s buzzing with excitement embarked on Melville Super Bowl to experience their first taste of socials in secondary school at the College. The students conducted themselves wonderfully and were commended on their behaviour and cleanliness by the Melville Super Bowl and John XXIII College staff. A massive thank you to the Year 12 SRC students, Year 7 Homeroom Teachers and Mrs Anna Davila and Jo Wade who also generously gave up their time to help support the students on the night. Feedback from one parent after a bunch of Year 7s students piled into his car 'When’s the next one?' Look out Year 8!

Bonne Chance! Buona Fortuna! Ganbatte!
Throughout each day D Block is abuzz with conversations, activities and sounds in French, Italian and Japanese. However, when the bell goes at the end of the day, a steady stream of international local residence from France, Japan and Italy come in to talk to our hard-working Year 12 students to guide and support them to prepare for their WACE examinations.
According to the students, this is the best part of learning a second language. Sitting and having a deep and meaningful conversation across a range of issues relevant to young people today in a different language! It’s a tribute to the communication skills that our students have developed.
From all of us in Languages to each and every Year 12, keep up the good work and the very best of luck in your Trial Examinations. In particular, to our wonderful students in French, Italian and Japanese Bonne Chance! Buona Fortuna! Ganbatte!

ACC A Division Athletics
'We’re not sprinters'
'We can’t do this'
This was the overwhelming response we heard from students back in 2019 when we dared aim to move beyond Division B in the realm of ACC Interschool Athletics. But our students rose to this challenge in their training and fought through injuries and fatigue on the day, managing to win the carnival and secure a place in the ACC A Division Athletics Carnival in 2020. Proving that we are sprinters, and we CAN do this… and we did.
We made it into the A Division of the ACC Interschool Athletics sphere. It took resilience, it took strength, and it took heart, but the students did it!
And now in 2021, on 15 September, our athletics team of 150 students stepped out onto the track and field of the HBF Stadium to compete in the A Division with the sole objective of trying “simply our best” and they did exactly that. We knew the competition would be fierce against the other A Division schools, especially the champion school, Sacred Heart, who have held the title for the last 22 years. At the closing ceremony of the ACC A Division Athletics Carnival, after the students took to the field with grace, courage and passion, we were announced the equal winners with Sacred Heart College of the Boys Aggregate Shield and Overall Runner Up champion school. Our team placed more pressure on Sacred Heart than any other school over the last decade of their reign, with a mere 4-point difference the John XXIII students proved again that when there is a will, there is way.
As a College, we are so proud of these students and commend them on their incredible efforts. We especially acknowledge our leaving Year 12’s for the huge part that have played in nurturing the sporting culture over the past few years. We now look forward to witnessing our future leaders continue as the custodians of the John XXIII College sporting spirit.
Looking beyond to 2022, we feel so grateful to know that if we believe… anything is possible.
