Newlands Read-a-thon: thank you

A huge thank you to the amazing Newlands PFA for organising this year's Read-a-thon, which was again held during lockdown. It was great to see even more participants than last year.

An incredible $6723 was pledged of which $6563 has been received.

All up 57 students spent 575 hours of reading across 1133 titles. Well done everyone!

All participants will receive a certificate with the winners receiving a book voucher each.

Drum roll...and the winners are as follows:

Prep:       Eli Taylor                 31.5 hours

One:        Xavier Natt             29.25 hours

Two:        Eva Tyler                 26 hours

Three:     Eddison Wu           46.5 hours (Overall winner)

Four:        Xavier McSwain   23.25 hours

Six:           Edith Hand            10.75 hours

A very special mention to Taylor in F1R and Clancy in 23E who raised more than $500 each.

Funds raised go to the library and I have already ordered 90 new graphic novels and two sets of decodable novels.

Book Week

Did you enjoy Book Week? I hope so.

Author Samone Amba talked about her writing and new book The Good Times of Pelican Rise and Martine Murray braved the perils of a live online presentation to talk about her book The Wanting Monster.

The book mark design competition proved very popular and attracted 110 entries (F1 Level 44, 2/3 level 39, 456 level 27).  The design brief was as follows:

"This year's theme for Book Week is 'Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds.' Can you design an original bookmark to help celebrate 2021 Book Week?

Judging was difficult as there are some very talented designers out there but the overall winner was Prep student Suleman.
