Literacy
In SMART Spelling we will continue looking at the sounds the letters make when in a word for example ‘wh/ee/l ‘wheel’ is made up of the digraphs ‘wh’ and ‘ee’ and the graph ‘l’ . We will continue to look at common digraphs (2 letter spelling choices such as wish , the, say ) and trigraphs ( 3 letter spelling choices were , are ) that we find in our take home books and sight words.
Writing - Different writing genres will be explored throughout the term, such as a recount, a non-fiction report and narrative writing. We are looking at sentences, what makes up a sentence and how we can make our sentences more interesting by adding adjectives and connectives such as and, because, so etc.
The students will continue practising leaving spaces between words and adding punctuation (capital letters and full stops). We are encouraging students to write words by recording the letter to match the sounds they hear, attempting to write initial, middle and end sounds in unfamiliar words.
Students are learning to read over their writing and make any corrections or adjustments to improve their written work.
In Handwriting the students will continue to learn the correct formation and size of lower and capital letters and the placement of the letters on the dotted thirds.
‘Speaking and Listening’ skills will continue to be a focus this term as the students participate in Social skill afternoons. This will build upon their ability to take turns, ask to have a turn, talk about a game that is being played and play fairly. They will practice looking at the person they are talking to and using their manners.
