Prep - Year 1 Remote Learning

Wild Explorers!

This week, our Year Prep and Year 1 students have participated in online workshops run by Zoos Victoria. The students have had to put on their explorer hats and binoculars and have had to 'look up, down and all around' to spot different animals at the Zoo. They have learnt new information about different Australian and African animals, as well as the life-cycles of butterflies, wallabies and frogs. They then had a special Literacy activity to complete. The Year Prep and Year 1 students cannot wait to visit the animals at the Zoo. Thank you Zoos Victoria!

We want to congratulate the Year Prep and Year 1 students on their mini Inquiry performance presentations. They are two minute videos created to entertain an audience. Some students choose to become actors/actresses, do stand up comedy, some choose to dance and sing and some choose to play musical instruments.

Year 2/3 Remote Learning

For Religion the last couple of weeks students have been reflecting on the celebrations in their lives. Here is a sample of some of the celebrations.

Picture 1
Picture 1

Students then reflected on different Bible stories that had celebrations.

Picture 2
Picture 2

Students then identified some of the specific celebrations of the Catholic Church.

Next week the students will be learning more about the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

While completing this lesson online, the students and I were also learning how to use Google Jamboard.  It is one of the Google Apps in the Education Workspace and is just like a whiteboard. The students have the ability to add their ideas or answers (see picture 1 and 2 above) to the Jamboard in real time for everyone to see. All students had the ability to answer without waiting for their turn and someone taking their answer. I did encourage the students to add their name to what they posted so that I could see who was answering.  Denise Esposito

Year 3/4 Remote Learning

Last week, the year 3/4s thought it would be a great idea to have a day where they didn't have to get out of their pyjamas! It was decided that Wednesday would be the day. We also all thought that it was a good way of celebrating a few of the student's birthdays and  the end of term 3.

I was  excited when Marie said that we were having a Pyjama Day at school.

It was nice to not have to wake up and get dressed straight away.  The pyjamas I was wearing were shorts and a t- shirt and it was comfy.  But I have been feeling cold when I wake up in the mornings because it's been freezing. I also saw my friends in their pyjamas and it was good to see them.  By Connor.

Today was such a fun day! I loved everything we did today. We decided to have PJ day so everyone could be comfy (and lazy like me) while doing school work instead of dressing up in the morning. We also did it because it was some of our friends’ birthdays so we did PJ day to kind of celebrate those birthdays. I have got to say that it was a great idea!

I liked having Pyjama Day because we all had fun. When I left home, I was wearing my soft pyjamas. I was excited to be wearing my pyjamas at school because I didn’t have to wear my school clothes. It was easy to play in my pyjamas. By Michael

On PJ day, I wore my PJ’s all day. It was fun because I usually don’t wear my PJs all day and only when I go to bed. Everyone was wearing different PJs and when I saw Ethan wearing a Zebra onesie, I thought it looked warm I also thought it looked cool. By Jaxon

On Pyjama Day it was a lot of fun because firstly, I could sleep in for an extra 10 minutes. Pyjama Day was to celebrate four birthdays and the last week of the school term 3! When I went to school, I went in as a zebra. All of the other year 3/4 and Marie also had their pyjamas on. I had my pyjamas on for most of the day. When it was play time outside, I had a good time with my friends. I loved this day because it was better than the other days because I didn’t have to wear my school uniform. By Ethan

We did pj day because it was going to be someone's birthday. I felt actually -  I don't know. My emotion was bored because we have to stay home in our pjs instead of going in pjs to school. It was different to other days because other days I just wear normal clothes. I enjoyed pj day because I like to stay in my pjs and never change. By Ishe

Year 5/6 Remote Learning ~ Sayonara Term Three!

Art Competition

One thing I've found out about our kids throughout this period (I think I already knew it!) is how creative they are. Whether it's solving problems online, fixing IT issues, helping each other solve Google Classroom problems, they are very clever and show great creativity, one of the a school's Learning Dispositions. Have a look at some of the entries in the Year 5/6 Art competition....wow, they are fantastic and so CREATIVE!

Writing Strategy ~ Show Don't Tell

A really effective strategy to use as a writer to engage the reader is called Show Don't Tell. The strategy asks the writer to give hints as to what the character sees, without giving it way. The writer is encouraged to use senses such as touch, smell, hearing etcetera to provide imagery for the reader. This week's stimulus was a rainbow. Here's just a few samples. We hope you enjoy them.

With buckets of rain coming down like crystals, I could feel the day getting gloomier. The room getting so dark I thought I was blind. I was sitting on my bed, feeling my soft silk pillow next to me. I hear the thunder cracking down on the concrete outside. When I make my way down stairs I could see a ray of sunlight coming from the backyard. Then I look to my left and find my mother and my sister making cupcakes! I felt the warmth from the oven and the sugary scent from the frosting as well as that sweet scent. I just wanted to take all of them and stuff my face with the chocolate goodness. The gloominess was going away and for the first time I felt happiness coming over me. I stepped outside onto the hard wet, wooden planks in my backyard and saw the most amazing thing...

Maleah Year 6

It was raining so hard I thought that the rain would never stop. Then, slowly, the rain stopped. Then the sun was shining in the clouds, it was then that I saw it. The colours in the sky were so beautiful. It was so big,  so I wanted to see what was at the end. After I reached the end there was a big  red x. Just then I thought that treasure was in there, so I dug it and when I reached the end I found a big treasure chest. Quickly I opened it with a rock. I looked inside and there was gold, a lot of it!! I took some gold home and became rich.

John Zymaras & Ahan Year 5

I never understood them until that day, when it had been raining so hard that i thought my tin roof would cave-in around me, i could hear the pounding of the hail and the rain, the vibrations coursing up my hand.

Then it stopped.

Without a warning. I could've imagined it all, I ventured outside to make sure I hadn't been dreaming. All I could see was everything covered in mud, from my doorstep to the speck in the distance, which was my fence. My feet squelched as I stepped in the mud, engulfing them both. I looked up, then I saw it!

The thing I had always heard my friends talking about. Personally, I thought they were being dramatic, but it was true. The colours sprang across the grey sky bringing it to life with reds, oranges, blues and many. many more colours. I had finally seen one and they weren't kidding, it was beautiful.

Nicola Year 6

One moody day It was raining like normal but then after the I could see a beautiful  long majestic rainbow. I wanted to slide down it so much, I was thrilled even by the thought of sliding down it's long beautiful colors, I wondered if it would be hot or cold. So I ran to it with my black and now wet shoes and when I climbed it, it was very hard because my shoes were still a bit wet. Then I slid down it, it was so hot. When I was at the bottom I could see a green leprechaun with a pot full of shining giant pieces of gold. Then I asked the green leprechaun if I could have some. Then the leprechaun said yes because I was wearing green and something lucky will come in the near future.

Julian and Brian Year 5

After buckets and buckets of rain I could see it, it was faint but it was there, the colours; the reds the blues the greens, all of it up in early morning sky, the sun barely up. I could feel warmth for the first time in weeks, after the cold and endless rain it had stopped and there was a reward.  I could smell the wet grass and leaves on trees and could hear drops of rain still falling gently around me. I felt joyful after laying eyes on it. The thought of it always seemed so common and basic for me, but right now, I feel free. This is a sign, I know it. A sign to move on, and even if there's no gold or leprechaun at the end, this rainbow is something else.

Lily & Sylvie Year 6

On the wet and sunny day, I walked outside. It felt like I'd waited a hundred years for this opportunity. As I went outside I suddenly saw this colourful and joyful thing. It filled the sky with the light of the sun and water. It stretched out for miles and all you could see were these brilliant colours in the sky .

John Di Vincenti and Ryan Year 6

It was a fine spring evening, the sun was shining brightly and the birds were chirping happily. Rain had just poured down from the vast, blue sky and the plants were soaking up the moisture. Then we saw it..... so vibrant and colourful, yet so calm and mysterious. It was such a sight to behold, like a work of wonders. We knew it meant something, but we just couldn't understand what. Like a message was being sent for everyone to see, but we just didn't know what it meant. So we stood there, watching in awe. We enjoyed the moment and felt its warmth. As the leaves fell silently from the trees, we knew it was our time to leave. But we made sure we would always have a memory of it with us. A memento to remember Its beauty.

Hanna & Sienna Year 6

The water flowed over the river's banks,  flooding the streets. Hailstones as big as tennis balls smashed holes in windscreens. Clouds raced across the sky and the bucketing rain began to cease. Suddenly a bar of light sprung across the sky. The damp grass made squeaking noises under my boots as they rubbed together. I had stood watching the rain.  I had waited six hours for this. The rainbow was finally here.

Thomas & Josh Year 6

As I  walked outside of the hospital room, it felt like the whole world was spinning. My sister was dead. I looked  through the window seeing something that made my heart beat just a little bit faster. The most vibrant colours I had ever seen. It was a sign, my sister's favourite thing! I could almost see her smile of joy jumping and bouncing, it was as if she was really there. Something magical floating up high in the air. Thunder struck but the colours were still there. Maybe someday I will be there too, enjoying the sunlight...just me and you.

Isabelle & Ria Year 5

As I was going out onto my front balcony, I saw a little colourful thing in the sky. I could see the rain through my window and it looked like a bit of juice had leaked everywhere. It was so sad. I then realised that  I couldn't go and play outside. I wanted to play ball with my cousin. At least I had a rainbow!

Joshua and Liam Year 5

As I was ready to leave the house my little sister said she broke something (though I didn't really care because I was in a rush to leave). As I entered my room I grabbed my phone and as I was going to put on my necklace I realised that it was broken. I fell to the ground and my eyes started to fill with water, it felt like I had been stabbed right in the heart. I was so devastated!

I was too sad so I went for a walk to try and calm myself down. When I stepped outside the sun shone everywhere. As I got to the park, all I heard was the joyful sound  of happy kids and families having fun. After seeing the happiness on everyones face I felt a little better. I then looked up into the gloomy sky. It started to rain.. All the families ran for cover, but I just kept walking, getting drenched from the rain. All of a sudden, the rain became lighter and the sun started to shine through. Then the most amazing thing happened.....bright colours filled the sky and I began to feel happy again.

Ayisha & Caitlin Year 5

GOOD LUCK JOSHUA!!!

As we farewell Term 3 and enjoy a well deserved break, we wish Joshua Galvin King in Year 5 all the best for the big Grand Final next week, where his beloved Melbourne Demons will try and do something they haven't done since 1964...win a Premiership! At least we know someone will be happy at our school (yes, Ethan McLeay, AKA mad Bulldogs fan, we're thinking of you too!) Good luck to you both!
