Mental Health Week

This week is Queensland Mental Health Week. The initiative encourages us to think about our mental health and wellbeing, regardless of whether we have a lived experience of mental illness or not. Caring for our mental health and wellbeing is necessary at any age; however, it becomes increasingly important during adolescence. Complex physical, psychological, and social changes place young people at increased risk of mental health concerns.

The theme of Mental Health Week is ‘take time – for mental health’ and recognises the importance of prioritising activities that promote mental health and help-seeking behaviours.

Staff and students this week have been encouraged to share gratitude and self-care tips to support mental wellbeing. I thought I would share some of these with you.

“I am grateful for my family, friends, parents, and Clayfield College – I use deep breaths for my stress.”

“One of my strategies is finding my happy place – I am also grateful for the wonderful school I attend.”

“Self Care Tip – Bake Brownies”

“Get a Reality Check – don’t make a mountain out of a molehill.”

Maintaining good mental health is about recognising what we are already doing and identifying areas we have forgotten about or could improve on. We understand that early intervention can reduce the impact of mental illness and improve the trajectory of mental health across the lifespan. We know that in order to keep a car going, we need to fill it with fuel, add oil, and regularly check the tyres. Similarly, we know that plants need water, fertiliser, and sunshine for them to grow.

So this week, we encourage everyone to reflect on what they do to care for their mental health.
