Debating - Round One
On Monday, the 18th of March, Viewbank College’s Senior Debating teams participated in our first debate of the year, and with excellent results. We have five teams this year (one more than last years!), and I congratulate everyone who signed up and participated.
Our D grade team, comprised of Mahek Fazal, Christina Li and Mathilde Valenza would have been debating for their first time in a senior debate, but won due to the other teams’ forfeit. They were the negative side for the topic “that we should ban horse racing”. Thank you for all of your hard work and preparation.
In C grade, Viewbank had two teams, both arguing the negative side of the topic “that police should always carry tasers rather than guns”. Team 1, Abigel Wright, Benjamin Enticott and Sahana Selvendra debated powerfully and won, with Abigel well-deservedly earning best speaker. In C grade Team 2, Joshua Coley, Kennedy Testolin and Luca Pedersson also excelled, winning their debate, with Kennedy receiving best speaker.
In A grade debate, Andrew Li, Mila Olsen and I argued the negative side of the topic “that, instead of being elected, members of Parliament should be randomly selected”. We won the debate and Mila earnt best speaker.
This is truly impressive start to the debating year. I am proud of all of Viewbank’s debaters, and excited to see the same outstanding passion and eagerness expressed in Viewbank’s talented debate teams as we continue throughout the year. Keep reading the newsletter for more news and updates on future rounds, and keep an eye out for the middle and senior great debates that are to be held later this year.
