Term 1 Holidays:
The holidays are upon us and our senior students are looking forward to a restful break, especially after an eventful term. These holidays also provide a wonderful opportunity for students to establish effective study routines, reflect on their achievements and set goals for the new term. Concerns have hopefully been addressed and resolved successfully.
It is important for students to balance the break from the routine of school with effective study. Units 3 & 4 students are strongly encouraged to use the next couple of weeks purposefully to reinforce their understanding of concepts and material covered, and to support their preparation for the end-of-year exam period.
It is important for students to:
- manage their time effectively by constructing a realistic study timetable
- set specific and clear goals for the two weeks and for the new term
- review their notes and ensure workbooks/Summary books are up to date
- organise notes, handouts and clearly label them
- review their subjects’ Study Designs at: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vce/studies/index.aspx
- identify concerns and difficulties and make a list of questions to follow-up with teachers in Term 2.
Students can speak to both their Level and Wellbeing Leaders on areas of concerns and to their Mentors if they require assistance in creating a study timetables.
Senior Years Student Council:
The Senior Years Student Council comprises motivated and proactive students from Years 10 and 11 who are keen to assist in implementing improvements and lending a voice to the Senior Years. The Senior Years Student Council Representatives holds a leadership position within the College and students are involved in consulting with the SRC, College Captains and Senior Years Leadership Team on matters that relate to improving the College.
I would like to welcome the following students to the 2019 SYSC:
Careers News – Year 10:
Year 10 students have been attending careers workshops over the past 2 weeks, predominantly to gain a greater understanding of the transferable skills vital to any future workplace. Students have reflected on their capabilities at this point in time, used the STAR approach to explain their strengths and added their findings to their career planners. An overview of the STAR approach is as follows:
- SITUATION – Describe the situation which required you to use the skills
- TASK – Within this, what were your responsibilities?
- ACTION – Outline the skills you used to carry out the task
- RESULT - What were the outcomes of your actions? How do you know they were successful?
Students have also:
- Updated their online Career Planner (this is updated at least annually)
- Entered any subject areas they are considering into the Year 11 subject area.
At this point, you can assist your child by:
- Discussing with them their favourite subjects, interests, skills and goals.
- Encouraging them to reflect on their strengths and challenges.
- Start gathering information on careers or courses they might be interested in.
We will be meeting with all students at the commencement of term 2. Prior to this meeting students will be expected to:
- Show an up to date career plan.
- Explain their Work Experience plans – including employer contact details.
- Discuss subject areas and pathways they are considering for Year 11 so we can provide support.
Career exploration resources are available ongoing via the careers website www.viewbankcollegecareers.com and time sensitive resources are provided in the weekly careers newsletter, accessed via the compass newsfeed. Work Experience arrangement forms are due at the careers office by May 17th.
If you would like support with careers, please make an appointment with Wendy Peck or Ruth Perkins using the following link https://www.viewbankcollegecareers.com/?page=appointment-booking
