Debating

Until plans were hijacked by COVID-19 policies, Mount Alvernia students had made an enthusiastic start to debating in 2020.

Although we entered only a Year 8 team to the Queensland Debating Union competition, several other students from Years 9 to 11, under the leadership of Ms Mayes and Mrs Walker, were attending sessions with the Brisbane Girls’ Debating Association.  On Monday afternoons, at BGGS, from 3.30pm to 7pm, students from Years 9 to 11 were experiencing a workshop followed by a short prep debate against another participating school.  This keen team consisted of Charli Ryan, Chloe Liebenberg, Jemima Bishop, Maddison Brown, Jess Chriprzcuk-Morales, and Hayley Turner.

On 11 March, Lily-Rose Falzon, Ella Falzon, Alyse Effeney, and Dominque Van Zyl debated St Rita’s in the QDU competition on the popular proposition that homework should be banned, losing by only one point and impressing their coach, Mr White.

We congratulate girls on their efforts and thank parents for their support in this super short season.  We can only hope more debating opportunities emerge later in the year!
