Sport Captain

Over my years at Mount Alvernia I have personally experienced the decrease in levels of participation across the 9, 10 and 11 year levels.  This may be due to young girls feeling uncomfortable, popularity, and management of time, all of which I have personally experienced.  My goal for this year is to increase participation rates within these year levels.  A campaign, featuring Australian tennis player Ash Barty, was released by Tennis Australia late last year, encouraging Aussie girls to participate in sport.

The campaign promotes girls in sport across Australia, with Ash stating, “Don’t let the voices get to you, I play for me and you play for you”.  Girls need to believe in themselves because, I promise you, Mt A offers great opportunities for girls in sport.  Mt A’s sports program allows an environment for competitive players and for girls who wish to have fun with friends and experience something new.  The sporting community in Mount Alvernia welcomes all girls and I encourage all students to give it a go, because you never know if you may love it, unless you have a go.

Sports Committee

Every year girls are provided the opportunity to nominate themselves to become part of the Sports Committee which, alongside me, helps promote and encourage participation in sports across the College.  This year I am thrilled to be working with each of these year level representatives:

  • Chloe Rogers (Year 8)
  • Sally Galvin (Year 9)
  • Ella Shackel (Year 10)
  • Charlotte Russell (Year 11)
  • Sophie Green (Year 12)

CaSSSA Swimming

Last Thursday, 12 March, a group of over 60 girls represented the College in the CaSSSA swimming competition, racing against many Catholic girls’ high schools across Brisbane.  The girls did a fantastic job on the day, looking great in the new college swimmers and it was evident that they all tried their absolute bests, leaving everything they had in the pool.  The girls brought home a third place pendant in the 12 years age group, which is an outstanding achievement for them.  It is looking like there is a promising future ahead for the College Swim Team.  That afternoon we were all welcomed back to the College, by the Spirit Squad.  It was really amazing to see the support from other girls throughout the College.

Overall, I am so proud of all the girls who participated, and I hope that they continue their passion of swimming throughout their high school journey.
