Today’s Gospel is a reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (Mt 14:22-36) Order me to come to you across the water. It entails the theme of courage whereby Jesus called out to them, saying ‘Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid’. We are like Peter in this Scripture where Jesus calls us to have courage. This is so pertinent during these challenging, uncertain and anxious times.

This is a time where we draw upon our faith and trust in our God, taking on the words ‘to have courage’ and to provide others with courage through our words and actions.

My heritage is Maltese and it was my mother who always said to me in Maltese; ‘ħajr-mill-kuraġġ’ which translates to ‘have courage’. It is a phrase I continue to share with my own twin boys today. As with many translations, the meaning often loses its power, as the way it is originally shared entails so much more.

The message Jesus gives us in this Biblical text about ‘courage’ also entails a great deal more than what we simply say when reading this Scripture. Peter eventually realises this, as should we during our current climate.

Let’s have courage together and help one another. Trust in God that everything will be alright.

Please share this prayer with one another and as my farewell says each week, ‘Stay Courageous’.

God bless you all. Stay courageous.
