Term 3 Week 6 Snapshot

Welcome to Week 6 of Home Learning

Congratulations! We are now half way through the term and the students have continued to shine and produce some very good work. We were all privileged this week to have a guest speaker, Jose Mantilla, to present to us about how we can all play our part in being environmentally friendly. Special thanks also to Ana Mantilla Benitez who helped organise this event.

Just a reminder to check the class stream or listen each morning during the whole class Google Meets to find out when students' mini lessons will occur each day.  Thank you to all parents for your continued support during this time!

Please read the following overview of the learning tasks for Week 6 of Term 3. The daily schedule, with additional instructions and resources, will continue to be posted on Google Classroom the night before each day of learning.

If your child has completed the day's tasks, they may be interested in completing one of these optional tasks. These tasks are open-ended, inquiry based and hands-on.

English

An overview of tasks for reading and writing this week are as follows:

READING

Students should be completing at least 20 minutes of independent reading a day as well as completing the tasks set by the teacher. Tasks this week focus on building understanding of persuasive texts and include:

  • Analysing how texts present opinions
  • Understanding the notion of bias in texts
  • Identifying and evaluating when bias is being used in articles
  • Reading for enjoyment - own choice

WRITING

Writing this week will continue to focus on persuasive writing. Tasks this week include:

  • Producing a written persuasive text
  • Editing ones work to ensure it is focused on the main idea
  • Editing for all types of publishing standards ( punctuation, spelling etc )
  • Writing choice board

While writing, we encourage students to use the writing cycle to ensure they are continuously developing and improving their writing.

The writing cycle consists of five stages:

1. Plan

2. Draft

3. Revise

4. Edit

5. Publish

Word Study

Students will continue to practice 30 "codes" of the English language through watching videos uploaded by their class teacher. Grades 4A, 4B, 4C and 4D will begin to explore Rule 30, a spelling rule which explains when to choose the code "ar", as in "car", or the code "a", as in "fast".

4E will continue to explore Rule 18, a spelling rule which explains when to choose the code '"ai" or "ay" and "oi" or "oy". They will also explore morphology through prefixes and suffixes. The "bootcamp" process allows students to practice the new skill until it becomes "automatic" in their brains.

4E will also investigate how prefixes and suffixes can change the meanings of words.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students will begin to learn about decimals and their application. They are also encouraged to play number games or use Mathletics to continue practicing basic number skills. Tasks for the week include:

  • Exploring the occurrence of decimals in their daily lives
  • Naming and understand decimals
  • Understanding the connection between fractions and decimals
  • Ordering decimals on a number line
  • Attending a mini lesson with their teacher
  • Completing set tasks on Mathletics

Unit of Inquiry

This week, we will continue our inquiry into how people use initiatives to have an impact on environments, culminating in the students commencing their Summative Assessment for this unit. Students will engage in the following tasks:

  • Brainstorming environmental problems and recording ideas in small groups
  • Commencing the Summative Assessment task in Google slides - a project that takes place over 2 weeks
  • Choosing a problem to research and identifying its causes
  • Researching initiatives linked to their chosen problem

Wellbeing

Students will participate in Circles discussions to talk about how to collaborate online inclusively and respectfully.

A challenge will be set this week to try and make people that walk by your house, smile.
