NHSSA Netball Season has started
The NHSSA Netball season has just started and our four LCS teams have already had some matches. It's great to see an enthusiastic team spirit emerging as group sports get underway between schools. A nice change to have some normality back in sport. We wish all our LCS teams the best and hope they have a great time! Go LCS!
Snow Day at School
What a sight it was when Launceston awoke to snow last week. Students loved the opportunity to have some fun creating snowballs, snowmen and generally sliding around!
Our Prep students couldn't resist getting outside the classroom and these pictures show the joy of discovering some colder aspects of God's creation!
Positions Vacant
We have two positions vacant at school - please refer to our website for more details and how to apply: https://www.lcs.tas.edu.au/employment
The Rite Journey - update
Over the past fortnight, our year 9’s have enjoyed some excursions and special activities focusing on building respectful and enjoyable friendships. We all visited Hollybank for a day of challenge and adventure, negotiating the high ropes course and getting a taste of mountain biking. These challenges offered opportunities for students to challenge themselves and encourage one another.
Students have been exploring the way we react to our emotions and various strategies that we might use to manage our emotions in more positive ways. One interesting metaphor is using the idea of a snow globe being shaken as a comparison for a person responding in the midst of their emotions. It can be really helpful to let the snow settle before framing a thoughtful response to different situations.
The snow day offered a great chance for our year 9 students to get out and experience our school in a completely different light. Many snow-balls were made and most of them were directed towards the TRJ teachers!
To cap off a busy fortnight, the boys were taken to Notley Fern Gorge for a walk with a group of male teachers, where they spoke about the nature of friendship and the value of offering a genuine compliment. The girls spent some time off campus around a woodfire, cooking some marshmallows, in fellowship and friendship.
Some of the concepts that we have explored relate to managing our emotions, listening empathetically and choosing to treat one-another with kindness, realising that respectful relationships sometimes require vulnerability, but can ultimately bring about a real sense of joy.
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29.

Year 8 Humanities treated to Tea Ceremony
Yesterday some of our Year 8 students were treated to a tea party as they learnt about Japanese Shoguns. Middle School Humanities Teacher, Kim Jansen, is extremely passionate about his tea and couldn't resist the opportunity to share his enthusiasm with his class. Students learnt about Japanese and Chinese Tea Ceremonies by drinking green tea and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There's wonderful creativity in classes at LCS and these provide great opportunities for learning.
Year 6 Lighthouse Project
Creativity at LCS continues with our Year 6 students who are currently designing and building a working model of a lighthouse. Our two classes began working together this week using paper mache to construct the land that the lighthouse will stand on. Such an exciting class project to make and we look forward to sharing their progress with you over the coming weeks.
Year 9 students to get a Cheesy Education
During Semester 2, Launceston Christian School students are learning all about the science of great tasting dairy products through the Great Ocean Road – Careers Made Here – Curds & Why programme.
Curds & Why brings real-life science into the classroom by examining the cheese-making process and the chemistry of great tasting cheese. Students then use this knowledge and their creativity to design a ‘dairy billboard’ to promote the Australian dairy industry and showcase the connection between chemistry, curds and cheese. Each students’ dairy billboard will be judged, with winners announced at the end of the programme.
Science Teacher, Russ Hendra, said the Great Ocean Road programme helps to bridge the gap between theory and practice. “Our students love being involved in Curds & Why, which provides a fun and unique perspective on how chemistry is used outside of the classroom.”
Tracy Wong, Great Ocean Road Senior Brand Manager, said Curds & Why highlights the vast array of opportunities within Australia’s dairy industry. “We are proud to support a programme that offers real-life learning about the role chemistry plays in making dairy products,” Tracy Wong said. “By completing science experiments and reports, students learn that there are many different skills and career opportunities in the dairy industry – including science, maths and manufacturing – all of which make Australia’s dairy industry exciting and cutting-edge.”
The programme is being taught through our Year 9 Advanced Science classes and involves 30 schools from across Australia. Great Ocean Road provides resources and curriculum as well as a $100 Coles gift voucher to purchase products.
At the conclusion of the Curds & Why programme, each student will receive a certificate for completing the programme. The national ‘dairy billboard’ winner will receive $500 for their school, with second place receiving $250 for their school and third place receiving $100 for their school. The results will be announced on 6th November 2020 with prizes presented to the winning schools and students.
How Curds & Why works:
Term 2, 2020 Schools receive supplies
Term 2 or 3, 2020 Students start the programme
18th September 2020 Programme work is submitted
6th November 2020 National winners and placegetters are announced.

Update on LCS Fee Policy
A reminder that parents wishing to withdraw a student from the school need to provide at least 10 school weeks’ notice in writing to the Principal stating when the student will be withdrawn and where they are to be educated. For example:
- Parents of a family moving interstate at the end of Term 3 need to provide written notice before the end of Term 2.
- Parents of a Year 10 student leaving at the end of the year need to provide written notice before the end of Term 3.
This notice period assists the School with future planning for classes, resources and staffing.
We encourage families to consider carefully before withdrawing students, and we welcome the opportunity to discuss any issues or concerns that may arise.
If a family withdraws enrolment without providing sufficient notice, a penalty of up to 5 weeks’ tuition fees may apply.
