Niina marni (Hi, How are you?),

Reconciliation Week was a great success with most, if not all, classes celebrating with lots of different activities related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. I was involved in a few activities, such as teaching the dreaming story ‘Thukeri’ to rooms 7 and 8, a class discussion on the Apology to the Stolen Generation in room 10 and a class discussion in Miss Ramsay’s class after watching the movie ‘In my Blood it Runs’.

This movie is a documentary following 10 year old Arrernte Aboriginal boy Dujuan as he grows up in Alice Springs.  He is a child-healer (Ngankere), a good hunter and speaks 3 languages. This movie shows Dujuan struggling to balance his traditional Arrernte/Garrwa upbringing with a state education. It highlights the need for many Aboriginal kids to be educated in a culturally appropriate way, combining the traditional way (such as learning their traditional language) with the new way. This is a great, educational movie to watch, but only suitable for years 6 and up.
