Teaching and Learning

Room 4

In room 4 we have been making snowflakes for our Winter Theme. We start by folding the paper diagonally twice then cutting out the edges to make patterns. When we open them up they look like snow flakes. We have had a lot of fun making them.

Did you know that one of the most valuable lessons to understand when learning a second language is that ‘language consists of patterns'?  If you know the pattern, you can swap and change the meaning of what you want to say with ease. Rm 9 & 10 have learned a range of sentences and vocabulary to go with a song in Japanese about going on a holiday.

Learning to sing the song made it easy for us to use these sentences in another way. We worked in pairs to rewrite our own versions of the song. It was fun to dream up some different holiday destinations and write our own verses.

We recorded them using the Chatterbox app, adding an image and a voice disguise, making them very entertaining to watch! We are looking forward to sharing them with each other this week.

Science News

Science has been bubbling and brewing into lots of exciting investigations this term. With our focus being on Biological Sciences, students have been learning a lot about animals and plants. Have a look at the overview of what students have been learning from each class:

Rooms 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

Students have been learning about how animals have certain features and how they use their features to adapt to their environment. This includes how animals eat, find shelter, care for their young and defend themselves against predators.

Rooms 7, 8 and 15

Bird feeders have been a huge focus for the last couple of weeks. Students have been working hard to create a bird feeder that would attract a local bird of their choice. They have been making prototypes of them and trying to solve the problem of how they can keep them safe from cats.

Rooms 9, 10 and 12

What do plants need to survive? Well students of Rooms 9, 10 and 12 could tell you that! They have been doing fun investigations to discover that air actually has weight. They also played an interesting card game on ecosystems and how plants and animals depend and rely on each other for their own survival. Without one, there can't be another.

Rooms 11 and 14

Riveting animal reports have been the focus for the senior students. They needed to come up with an engaging introduction that included lots of descriptive noun groups of their chosen animal. This is what Eliana Bransbury came up with:

The snow petrel gracefully glides upon the crystal blue waters of Antarctica. Its beautiful pure, white wings slice through the ocean breeze. The snow petrel is the purist of white with soft feathers and small beady black eyes. It walks upon the fresh, crisp snow with its black webbed feet. As it approaches the rotting seal carcass, it uses its small, black beak to feast upon the carcass.

PE News

Busy couple of weeks in PE for our students. Middle and Upper Primary have completed their units of Volleyball and all did an amazing job. I was impressed with their skill development in such a hard sport to master.

Junior Primary students have continued to enjoy their game creation tasks. Attached are some images of students creating and teaching their fun games to their class! Not an easy thing to do to jump up in front of a large group of people and teach them a game but these students did well.

Stay tuned for more sport news next term with Knockout Football and Netball for Year 6/7’s kicks off!
