Special Education News

On Friday 7 August, Special Education conducted its annual Student Representative Council ceremony. This year, 8 students nominated for the two SRC positions available. Students needed to do a speech outlining why and how they would represent the Special Education Unit in the schools SRC. The students showed great maturity in the way they conducted themselves and all were a credit to themselves and the school. Candidates were: Tiarne Bayliss, Curtis Chapman, Isaac Kellett, Evelyn Smith, Breanna Calthorpe, Krystal Harris, Tamika Williams and Zye Saillard. After the staff and students voted, Krystal Harris and Tamika Williams were elected Special Education SRC members. Well done, Krystal and Tamika! We know you will do a great job!

The Life Cycle of Chickens

This term in Special Education, the Purple and Green classes are learning about the Life Cycle of Chickens. We have been fortunate enough to have Brad Gillard from the Agriculture Farm and the Science Department provide us with 8 very cute chicks that were incubated and hatched so we can watch them grow.

Both classes voted from an extensive list of names to call our chicks ‘Chicken Nugget’, ‘Choc Top’ and ‘Chicka Boom’ just to name a few. The students all have daily jobs helping out with the cleaning of the hutch, changing the water several times a day (they are very messy with their bedding) and refilling their food container.

We have been monitoring their weight and graphing the results. We can’t believe how fast they are growing.

What I have enjoyed seeing the most is not just our Purple and Green classes taking care of the chicks but all of our students enjoying the experience and spending their lunch times hanging out with them, holding them and caring for them.

Coffee Shop

The Special Education Coffee Shop has recently started up again, following the COVID Safe guidelines. Unfortunately, it is only open to the staff as we cannot have the the general public in yet.

Students are happy to be back in their normal routine and the staff are really enjoying the meals. Hopefully in Term 4 restrictions will lift and we can have more people in, but for now we are happily serving staff.
