Identity and Mission

Winter Clothing Drive

A prominent Jesuit presenter to Catholic Colleges in Australia tells the story of a Year Twelve formal at an all-girls Catholic College in Sydney which took an unexpectant twist when some parents approached the Principal on the night to express their disappointment that their daughters were asked to wear pre-worn clothing and make a contribution, where possible, to those less fortunate (this idea actually came from the student body).

The Principal listened to the parents and then remarked that it was unfortunate that it had taken the parents this long to realize that a Catholic Education was the wrong education for their daughters.  Where is this going you might ask?  At the very basis of any Catholic institute is the concern for the ’other’.  The student body were simply demonstrating their concern for the ‘other’.

Recently, students at Mount Carmel were asked to support those on the margins by bringing from home any unwanted clothing or blankets. The response was prolific to say the least.

In one week, our Primary students filled a two-person tent to the brink while the Secondary students filled tubs situated in each classroom, which when put together was a fantastic sight.  These items will go to St Vincent de Paul to help support those in most need.  A particular thank you to Mr Chapman and the Secondary Mission Sisters for their organization of the secondary contribution and to the Primary Mission Sisters who each day took students from each class to put their contribution into the tent.

To the students and families thank you for espousing so generously what it is to be a Catholic school.
