New Year 8 Students Getting Into STEM Challenge!

During ECP our new Year 8 students have been getting hands-on this week. As part of the Assisted Learning Programme, students have been designing and constructing a range of STEM projects (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Students have been working in pairs to select a project of interest, then to carefully plan and select specific materials to address the design brief. A bit of friendly competition has been added to the mix, with students pitting their skills against their peers in each of the three different project categories.

STEM Projects:

  • Marble Run (Longest continuous Marble Run)
  • Spaghetti & Marshmallow Towers (Tallest free standing tower)
  • Roman Catapult (Furthest marshmallow launch)

Students are commended on their excellent behaviour and application during these sessions, with the STEM Challenge to be rounded out (and winners announced) late next week.

Quotes:

‘We are building a spaghetti tower and it is a lot harder than it looks. You have to make it really solid at the bottom then build up’ – Keisha

‘Our marble run is going great. We have set up a ramp and a funnel, so the marble takes longer to move along the course’ – Oscar

‘I was going to quit when the spaghetti kept breaking, but now Ed and I have got it going. It looks wonky, but stands up nicely now’ - Olga
