College Sport

Sadly, school sport for Term 1 has abruptly concluded, along with most of our students other sports and activities.  It’s a difficult and frustrating time for everyone, and keeping active while social distancing is another challenge we are faced with.  Enjoy this free time to jump on the trampoline, throw some hoops, kick a ball in the backyard, do some body weight exercises or practice some skills.

At this stage it is still unclear when school sport will resume.  All sport excursions and participation in sports competitions in Term 2 have been cancelled, as directed by the Catholic Education Office.  This includes Field Day, all inter-school cross country carnivals, and all sports rosters.  The Year 3- 10 athletics carnival has been postponed until term 3, pending sport resuming.  The College will continue to keep families informed as information becomes available.

Secondary Cricket

This term Mount Carmel was been represented by two teams in the SSATIS Cricket roster.  The Gold team completed three matches, with solid wins against Friends Red, Friends Blue and Fahan.  This team were well placed at the top of the ladder and were looking forward to a spot in the Grand Final, before the season abruptly concluded.

The Navy team, including Year 7 and 8 students, only played two games, winning their first game against Fahan and losing to St Mary’s in their second game. The team played really well and were very supportive of each other, especially as some players were more experienced than others.

Thanks to Ben Harrison and Louise Maddock from the University Cricket Club who supported our teams with coaching and umpiring, and Sarah Gray for her support with the Navy team.

Secondary Soccer

This term Mount Carmel fielded a Year 7 and a Year 8 soccer team in their respective rosters.  It’s a case of what could have been for the Year 8 team, who were stranded on top of the ladder with 4 wins from as many games, defeating Collegiate, Fahan, Dominic and MacKillop.    The team has been organised and committed all season and have played some fantastic soccer.  Thanks to Margaret Pergar for coaching the team again.

Despite struggling for numbers from the outset, the Year 7 team were really enjoying their roster.  Thank you to the players for sticking with it and encouraging friends to join the team to keep the roster going.  Hopefully everyone will be back next season.  Thanks to Emily Ridgeway for managing the team.

Primary Soccer

Well done to everyone that gave it their all at soccer this term, and especially to those that were giving it a go for the first time.  Hopefully those new boots will receive some use down the track. I hope the students had lots of fun and families enjoyed watching them.

Thanks to all the secondary students that helped out with coaching and umpiring including Paola Varveris, Cecilia Bowman-Shaw, Ella Gowans, Erin Ayers, Matilda Paul, Tammy Field, Tayla Gray, Matilda Ridgeway.  Thanks also to the parents that gave up their time to Coach, Manage and Umpire including Katie Klasen, Madi Seeber-Peattie, Jane Steele, Susan Williams, Rebeccah O’Halloran, David Forrest and Tim Conrades and to Damien Lowe who led the training on Tuesday lunchtimes.

Primary Tennis

The JSSATIS Year 5/6 tennis roster has also now drawn to a close.  Well done to the participants in the team which included Year 5 student Mia Cassidy and Year 6 students Sofia Bowman-Shaw, Clara Hurd and Freya Barwick.  The team had a mix of experience, but it was encouraging to see the improvement in the new players, even in such a short season.  Thanks to supervisors Justin Bowman-Shaw and Steven Hurd for helping and organising the girls.

Sailing Achievement

Congratulations to Year 8 student, Emma Sullivan, who competed in the Lauderdale Yacht Club Open Bic Skiff Gold Cup at Roaches Beach, Fredrick Henry Bay last weekend. Emma completed 6 out of 8 races in challenging conditions involving strong gusts on Saturday and shifting wind direction on Sunday. Competing against boys and girls from Lauderdale and Kingston Sailing clubs Emma achieved third place for three races coming in fourth position overall and used the weekend to further develop her sailing skills.
