SPIL - Students & Parents as Partners in Learning

CGHS 2019 Years 7 and 8 Learning Presentations

Thankyou to Year 7 families who joined us on the evening of February 12 to hear about the SPIL project - an important initiative in student engagement, partnership with families and keeping constant focus on improving learning and attaining personal best.

Below is an outline of the steps which will be undertaken across the academic year, culminating in the Term 4 Learning Presentations. The handouts from the evening are available on our website in Curriculum , Year 7.

Additionally all materials are in Moodle (student log in with school network details) in the Personal Learning Plans course.

Students in Years 7 and 8 will be developing Learning Presentations based on their Personal Learning Plans (PLP) for 2019.  This is an initiative designed here at school to enable the students of these years to engage in their learning in a meaningful and goal oriented manner.  The PLP’s are completed by students early in the year to have them reflect on their learning and set goals for the year ahead.

1. In the PLP students reflect on:

- Learning strengths

- Learning goals

- Learning challenges

- Success strategies

 - Parents/carers are invited to comment on the PLP

-  PLP can be altered / added to throughout year

2. Assessment Task Reflections are:

• Issued when students get back a major assessment task – likely 2 or 3 times each subject across the school year

• Asks students to reflect on:

-What learning they demonstrated in the task

-Aspects of learning which need to be improved

-Strategies which can be used to improve learning

-Asks for a parent statement on task or daughter’s reflections.

3. SPIL Surveys are:

- Completed in each subject at the end of Terms 1, 2 & 3

Students give feedback to teachers on:

-Aspects of teaching and learning they enjoyed

-Aspects of teaching and learning they would change

-Teaching strategies that would support the student’s learning.

Surveys are completed electronically using Google Forms so as to be collated for teachers

4. The Student Learning Presentations are an opportunity for the students of Years 7 and 8 to discuss their learning achievements for 2019 and their learning goals for 2020 to both members of staff and parents and caregivers.

Students will also have an opportunity to present and discuss examples of work undertaken throughout the year. It is also an opportunity for members of the wider school community to acknowledge the hard work and efforts the students have devoted to their learning and we believe this to be an invaluable process in the development of each individual student.

The Learning Presentations are compulsory for Years 7 & 8 and will commence in Week 7 of Term 4 and will continue through to the end of Week 8.  In Term 4 you will receive an invite you to come and see your daughter’s Learning Presentation, along with a member of the staff here at CGHS.  The presentations will take place in the Seminar Rooms in the Library and will take a maximum of 15-20 minutes duration. If students do not wish to present to a member of staff, they will be expected to upload a 2 minute video, PowerPoint or Prezi presentation of their Learning Presentation to a Google classroom where their Personal Best/DEAR teacher will be able to view their video presentation.

Bookings will be done online in Term 4 and will use the same online booking platform as for the Parent-Teacher Interviews. Your presence at the presentations is invaluable and your support of your daughter’s learning is appreciated.  We look forward to seeing you in Term 4.

Following the presentation parents/carers have the option of completing an SLP Feedback form:

- To be completed after your daughter has given her Learning Presentation

- Allows parents to give feedback on:

-Aspects of your daughter’s learning you were happy with in 2019

-Aspects of your daughter’s learning you would like to see improved in 2020

-Anything you would like your daughter’s teachers for 2020 to be aware of.

An ELP lasts for two days, with each day following a similar format. You will select a discipline you are interested in and you spend the day working in that area. Projects are offered to Year 10, 11 and 12 students, depending on the location. Over the course of each day, the students complete a proposal detailing the problem, test results and the recommended solution which is assessed by the guest engineer. The students then build their final solution and test it, usually to destruction, before debriefing again with the engineer. During the Project, the students tour the host university, inspecting facilities and observing current research projects and highlights of each faculty.
