The Round Up

Catch up with FACEBOOK.

The College Facebook pages have items of general interest to our community and is updated daily. If it is happening around our campuses (or as has been the case recently - around our homes) there is a good chance it will be on Facebook.

Here are a few snapshots of what happened in the past month .

MABO DAY

Recently it was Mabo day, commemorating the anniversary of the historic Mabo decision, when the idea of “terra nullius” was rejected by the High Court. Eddie Mabo was a Torres Strait Islander man who fought to overturn the legal notion that gave the British ownership of Australia. For over 200 years, Aboriginal land rights had been denied, but the Mabo decision in 1992, led to the Native Title Act, which legally recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander native title for the first time.

This day is one of special meaning alongside Reconciliation and Naidoc weeks which are celebrated when possible across the college

YOUNG SCIENTISTS

Over at Tallis Campus our prep students were having fun with a science experiment. Plastic water bottle about 1/4 filled with vinegar, a balloon with bicarb soda in it. Put the balloon on the lip of the bottle, shake the balloon so the bicarb goes into the vinegar the gas created blows up the balloon.

EXAM and GAT update

Minister for Education James Merlino announced that VCE exams will begin in the week commencing 9 November and will be completed by 2 December. This is a month earlier than expected when learning from home was first announced. Students and teachers will have ample time to complete outcomes and school – based assessments with the support of adjusted study designs.

This bringing forward of the exams is a result of our earlier than expected return to on-site learning on Tuesday May 26.

ATAR scores and VCE, VCAL results should be available before the end of 2020 and university offers can be made to Victorian students like their peers around Australia.

The General Achievement Test will also be held towards the end of Term 3, on Wednesday, 9 September 2020.

Dolls House Delivery

To support the F-2 community in their developmental curriculum, campuses are being provided with wonderful new dolls houses which will enhance students learning, interaction, language and imagination.

One Facebook comment congratulated the staff member who put all the kits together. We all second that!

PREP GARDEN AT TALLIS

The Tallis Campus Prep garden is looking beautiful after our backyard blitz recently! Huge thank you to everyone involved in that! Our students are very excited to keep the strawberries growing.

REVERE CASUAL DRESS DAY

Just an update on our reverse casual dress day. Thanks to everyone who participated. Peacock raised $91, Tallis $41 and both are donating to State Schools Relief. (They assist disadvantaged students and families with uniforms and shoes) Wexford raised $152 for Geelong Mums (recycling baby goods), Hendy $95 to go to Headspace (mental health) and Goldsworthy $47 for the Homeless.

NOTE

Remember please that children under the age of 13 years of age cannot have facebook. With your supervision of course you can share the items in family time.

Thank you to Dymocks

Dymocks Children’s Charities work in conjunction with Dymocks stores across Australia to provide brand new, books of choice to primary school libraries and organisations who need them most.

Dymocks stores fundraise through various initiatives such as:

  • Round-Up (customers rounding their purchases to the nearest dollar)
  • Selling charity merchandise (e.g. canvas bags, holding instore raffles etc)
  • Displaying marketing material to promote fundraising

The Waurn Ponds store selected Northern Bay College (four campuses with primary years students) to be their school beneficiary for the  Library Regeneration Program. Whatever amount Waurn Ponds fundraises, the charity then doubles that amount and donate it in book value you to the selected school.

In unbelievable levels of support the Waurn Ponds Store, managed by a new best friend Julie, raised $10,000 dollars for our - YOUR - children!  Of course the Dymocks Charity has then matched that with a further $10,000.

Our Librarians Shirley, Claire, Cheryl, Maz and Melissa had a wonderful time in May researching the best options from the 14, 000 books on offer.

The books are now on campus and we are looking forward to a major thank you event for Julie and the Dymocks Charity Rep.

Because of Travel restrictions that celebration has been delayed until regulations change, but in the meantime, our students from years P-6 can send a thank you!

Thank You Kellogg's and Channel 9

Many of you will recall that Channel Nine Destination Happiness had a feature on Northern Bay College and as part of that Kellogg's surprised us with the donation of a year's allocation of breakfast cereals for Breakfast Clubs and snacks for Extended School Day.

With COVID 19 closures and delivery schedules we deferred the Term 2 allocation but just this week a delivery of Term 3 cereals arrived.

This support from Kellogg's and Channel 9 is just fantastic and will help ensure our students have a good start and end to the school day.

Thanks Also to Josh and Alex for helping with the sorting.
