WE LOVE TO READ!

Books should make you smile and laugh, transport you to faraway places and spark your imagination. In P-2, we teach children the foundational skills to become proficient readers but most importantly we also try to help students develop a LOVE of reading! We are sure that everyone remembers a favourite book they read at school!

In the classroom, teachers read big books to the students most days. This is a most enjoyable part of the day as these books have large print and students love to read along and practice their reading strategies.

Sometimes during investigation time, students read the big books to their friends and pretend to be teachers!

Every student has a book box with a variety of books that they practice reading independently every day.

The teacher helps the student choose some books that are just right for their reading ability and each student also chooses some books of interest.

Throughout each week at school, the teacher will listen to their students read, encourage them and teach them new strategies. Students will then practice these skills when they read independently.

Students may also have “look books” in their book boxes. These books may be challenging but student like to look at the pictures and look for familiar words. It is amazing how students quickly build up their reading stamina to 15 minutes of independent reading!

Reading at home can be very enjoyable time and it also helps children practice their reading skills. Please see the link with some tips on how to support your child to read at home.

Reading at Home

My favourite book from the library is Frozen because it has talking marks so I know when people are talking. (Andrea)

My favourite book from the library is Ben Ten because he can turn into animals.  (Bailey)

A reading strategy I use is skip the word I don’t know, keep reading then go back and read the word.

(Scarlett).
