HSIE, Language and Middle School News

Semester One has been challenging for students and teachers alike but it has been wonderful to return to a feeling of normality as we have progressed through the term. Students should be proud of their achievements while working online and the independence that has been demonstrated during this time.

Middle School students have been focused on their writing skills in HR and PBL this term.

They have been immersed in the Seven Steps to Writing Success Program and their teachers have been impressed with their persuasive and narrative writing. The use of Sizzling Starts, Tightening Tension and Dynamic Dialogue, all crucial steps of the program, have really improved their writing.

Middle School would like to congratulate the following students for their outstanding efforts in Middle School strands in Semester One:

Global Awareness – Brooke Botting, Ari Dunn, Connor Gunn, Jun Heo, Joshua Khan, Mitchell Knowles, Erin Lauchlan, Mia McPhie, Annaliese Starr, Mitchell Topp, Ella Cowgill.

Mrs Carly Tjakuapi will be leaving Middle School at the end of this term. We are going to miss her wonderful contributions to the Middle School Program over the years. Mrs Danielle Le Page will be joining us in Term 3, after several years at Cowra High School. Mrs Le Page began her teaching career at Henry Kendall High School and we are happy she will be returning home to HKHS.

Mrs Travica and Mr Herring would like to congratulate Year 8 students for their efforts in French this term. Students are reminded that their Multimodal Assessment Task is now overdue and this must be submitted by the end of term.

Katie Czerwaniw from Year 10 is currently on student exchange in France. She has produced a blog about her experiences in her new home of Tours in Centre-Val de Loire, providing an interesting insight into learning a new language and culture. In just five months she has made memories that will last a lifetime. Check out her blog

Congratulates to our Year 7-10 HSIE students on their successful return to school this term. The majority of students have made the transition well and managed to keep up with the demands of online learning. The work we did online does count and I would remind students to consolidate their learning, ensure they have revised content and seek support from their class teachers.  We have returned to formal assessment programs and important course content will be assessed in the coming weeks.

I would like to acknowledge the amazing work of the HSIE, Language and Middle School staff during these unprecedented times. Mr Ardley, Mr Banks, Mr Herring, Mrs Kostalas, Mrs Lucca, Mrs Martin, Miss McLennan, Mr Newton, Mr Rozario, Miss Sexty, Mr Silver, Mrs Tjakuapi, Mrs Travica and Mr Withers worked tirelessly and collaboratively to ensure students had quality online learning materials this semester.

Enjoy the holidays and stay safe!

Mr Mark Macdonald

Head Teacher HSIE, Language

and Middle School.
