Message from the College Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy last day of Term 2! We have reached the end of our first semester of 2020, and what an interesting two terms it has been! We have all worked extremely hard as a community to ensure the events of the past few months have had minimal impact on our students and their learning.

On behalf of the staff of Tarneit P-9 College, I would like to extend a huge thank you for your support and positivity throughout this term. As you know we commenced with Remote Learning, which was a new experience for us all. We all had to rapidly learn and navigate new technologies and a very different way of teaching and learning. You all took an active and very time consuming role in supporting your children while they learnt from home - you did an outstanding job and we can’t thank you enough!

Five weeks in we received the announcement that we were returning to school and while it was incredibly exciting for us all, it meant a lot of preparation, change and flexibility from our whole school community. We introduced new hygiene practices, we went from two timetables to four and implemented staggered start and finish times. In addition to this we had limited community access to our school grounds, closed play grounds and modified our curriculum to reduce shared resources. While these changes were not ideal, or the way we would like to operate, they were all necessary for the safety of our wonderful students, staff and community.

Our students adapted quickly to this new way of working, showing their high levels of resilience and in many cases newly developed independence. They have learnt new routines, skills and mindsets. We are always incredibly proud of our students but we have been beyond impressed with them during this period. They are truly remarkable and we are incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to teach and support their development.

I would also like to take this opportunity to once again thank our wonderful staff who have gone above and beyond this term to support our students and community. To our Administration Team, Education Support Staff, Facilities Team, Technicians, Allied Health Staff, and Teachers.  You are an exceptional group of professionals and we are all very lucky to have you.

The Victorian Government has funded the online Triple P – Positive Parenting Program for all Victorian families, providing access to expert parenting advice during these challenging times.   The program is the online version of the Triple P Program that was developed in Australia and successfully implemented around the world.  Families can now access free expert parenting advice through the online Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. This program is relevant to families with children between 2 and 16 years and provides strategies to deal with specific challenges, such as building children’s resilience and dealing with conflict. Further information can be found at:

https://www.triplep-parenting.net.au/vic-uken/triple-p/

There are courses specifically for parents of toddlers to tweens, and for parents of

pre-teens to teens. It gives parents strategies to:

  • raise happy, confident kids
  • manage misbehaviour so everyone in the family enjoys life more
  • set rules and routines that everyone respects and follows
  • encourage positive behaviour
  • take care of themselves as a parent
  • feel confident they’re doing the right thing

We look forward to hopefully being able to resume some of our normal activities next term, however, we are planning for the possibility of continuing many of strategies implemented over the last few weeks to keep everyone safe. We will continue to keep everyone informed and share further information on our Term 3 guidelines before school resumes next term.

Once again I would like to thank our students and their families for a wonderful Term 2. Stay safe and enjoy the holidays.  We are looking forward to seeing you all on Monday 13 July, ready to commence an exciting Term 3.

Take care,

Kind Regards,
