Join us for our June Book Club

We would like to welcome interested students, teachers and parents to join our next book club meeting. We will be reading the best-selling novel ‘Me before you’ by Jojo Moyes.

A Love Story for this generation and perfect for fans of John Green’s ‘The Fault in Our Stars’, ‘Me Before You’ brings to life two people who couldn’t have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?

Our book club will be held on June 2nd on Zoom.

You can buy the book online, get it on audible or kindle, or borrow it as an ebook from your library. Please email boy@brighton.sc.vic.edu.au if you would like to participate.

We would love to see you there! Ms. Boyd.

Pet by Akwaeke Emezi

Genre: Fantasy

Age recommendation: 13+

Brief summary: Set in a type of post-apocalyptic world, where there used to be monsters, the main character, Jam, is visited by a strange creature who materialises out of one of her artist mother’s paintings. The creature tells her there are still monsters lurking, and she must help in the hunt.

Rating: 4 stars

Although this is not the type of novel I am usually drawn to, I was well and truly sucked into that world of invented language, unusual characters and a creature keen to seek revenge. Jam is a unique character: transgender, non-verbal for the most part, able to communicate telepathically with the creature from the painting. A fascinating read.

Brief Summary: When 16 year old Connor wags school to avoid seeing his ex-best friend he finds a trapdoor that leads to a secret chamber under his school. Sally Rodgers breaks into the same chamber looking for an ancient being and this is when Connor’s day takes a very unexpected turn…

Rating: 3 stars

This book is certainly action packed and has a cast of very diverse characters, the LGBT+ and aboriginal communities also feature. Well worth reading. My rating is probably based more on the genre (not a favourite for me) than the story itself.

An oldie but a goodie…

Allie McGregor’s True Colours by Sue Lawson

Published by Black Dog Books 2006Genre: FamilyAge recommendations: 13+Reviewed by: Ms. Hawes

Brief summary: Allie lives with her Mum, Dad, sister Sarah & brother Riley. Her father is on the radio and has a morning slot. Her mother is having chemotherapy and not at work. She was an English teacher at Allie’s school.

Rating: 4 stars

Allie is finding life particularly hard right now. She is desperately worried about her mum. Her friendships at school are changing and she doesn’t really know how she fits it anymore. We understand her situation and feel for her when she makes difficult choices and mistakes. Her friend Lou is a strong character and the story is realistic.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Brief Summary: Mary Lennox is a lonely, sullen child who has been raised in India by servants because her parents do not care for her. When Mary is orphaned suddenly, she is sent to England to live with her reclusive uncle in his huge old mansion. Having no other children to play with, Mary spends all her time exploring the large gardens around the house. As time passes, Mary’s explorations lead her to uncover secrets about the past and introduce her to the joy of nature and friendship.

Rating: 4 ½ stars

The Secret Garden is a lovely old classic. I picked this up because I was looking for a comforting read, and it did not disappoint. Though she is a bit of a difficult child at in the beginning, you can’t help but feel for Mary, who has experienced no affection. When she starts to explore the garden and make friends, you really feel her joy and wonder. I particularly loved the section with the little robin.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Genre: Ghost/Fantasy

Age recommendation: 12+

Reviewed by: Ms. Boyd

Brief summary: Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a perfectly normal boy. Well, he would be perfectly normal if he didn't live in a graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor the world of the dead. There are dangers and adventures for Bod in the graveyard, but it is in the land of the living that real danger lurks, for it is there that the man Jack lives and he has already killed Bod's family.

Rating: 5 stars

I adored this book! Neil Gaiman is the master of creepy and he makes even the most minor of characters in this novel interesting. I loved seeing Bod grow up surrounded by the quirky ghosts (and other supernatural creatures) who are raising him. There are also constant adventures and mishaps that keep you reading. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
