Debating & Public Speaking

Cocurricula Program

Barbara Moss

Debating & Public Speaking Coordinator

Students at BSC have the opportunity to join the Debating & Public Speaking CCP.  The Debate season has been in full swing so it has been a busy term!

Both Debating and Public Speaking not only rely on well-constructed, sound argument, but also on the public delivery of the information. Learning to confidently stand and speak in front of others is a daunting prospect, but the ability to do so is a highly valued skill that will be carried forward into a successful career.   Having confidence, commitment and a good speaking manner will make a critical difference to students as they move beyond Brunswick.  BSC participants enjoy the challenge offered by public speaking and are continually improving their ability to research, compose and deliver information to their audiences.

Rostrum Voice of Youth

On May 20, Brunswick Secondary College hosted one of two heats held across Melbourne by Rostrum Australia. Rostrum's national public speaking competition,  Voice of Youth, invites secondary school students to try their hand at public speaking and is a very popular event on the calendar.  Participants  in the heat travelled from as far as Frankston.

Our two entrants, Julia De Vere (Year 9) and Ella Szymanski (Year 7) did BSC proud with outstanding presentations.

Victoria

The most recent round of the Debating Association of Victoria's (DAV) regional-level Seniors Competition saw the excitement of a double win for Brunswick Secondary College, with both C and D grade teams being judged winners.  All participants work very  hard and also acknowledge the invaluable support from their families who ensure students are able to attend evening debating session.

Congratulations to  both the C-grade team (Isabella Harding, Julia De Vere and Madeleine Horner) and to the D-grade team (Ella Davis, Gerrard Hallis and Oscar Coopes).

In mid-August, the five-week Junior Secondary School Debating Program will commence, providing an introduction to debating for junior students in Years 7 and 8. We look forward to junior students joining the team and sharing in this fabulous experience.
