Science Year 7

The mysteries and wonders of the universe

by Sophie Maxwell, teacher of Science

Students went on a fun full-day excursion to Scienceworks last week to learn more about the mysteries and wonders of the universe. The highlight for many of us was going to the Planetarium where we lay down under the expansive dome-shaped screen to watch a fascinating show called Capturing the Cosmos. It highlighted the cutting edge research being carried out by astronomers within Australia and also revealed many of the constellations observed by our Indigenous ancestors for thousands of years.

We also toured the Beyond Deception exhibition which immersed us in the invisible fields and forces that surround us, such as gravitational waves, invisible light, sound and aerodynamics. It was wonderful to see how animated and engaged the students were in all the interactive exhibits, whether they were racing Cathy Freeman, creating cyborg avatars or walking on spaceships.

Overall, it was an excellent excursion and we left Scienceworks with many scientific facts and even more scientific questions!
