Student News
Congratulations to Niamh Jones of Year 11 who has been selected to represent Australia at the 2017 Hyundai World Cup in Shanghai in May. This is an open team and tournament. Niamh placed 8th at the 2017 Australian Open on the 4/5th on March. This is an amazing achievement and we look forward to hearing about her next journey and performances!
Glenelg Division Athletics Report
We look forward to tomorrow’s GD Athletics at Casterton and students have been training hard with our coach Rohan Garfoot to prepare for this event. The first event kicks off at 9.30am and we hope to go back to back in athletics titles. A program is attached to the newsletter.
Football
The new football season is fast approaching and the College Magpies team that the school is affiliated with will be entering Under 13 and Under 16 teams in the new “Hamilton Kangaroos Junior Football Association”. This is basically the same local competition as previous years; however, it will now be administered by the Hamilton Kangaroos Football Club and there are still some aspects to be determined like player numbers and permits. This may mean our numbers are capped and not all College students (depending on the interest shown) will be able to play and if you intend on playing then it would be in your best interest to be a registered player not a “permit” player. For more information please see the attached article from the local paper and a copy of the draft fixture for the season.
Sign up lists have been posted in the duty area and MYPEC noticeboard so please write your details down and see me for more information. A training session in the last week of term will occur and more details given then about the season ahead. We are also still searching for team managers; first aid people and general volunteers so please contact me if you can think you could help.
Swimming
Despite our intentions to keep swimming training continuing until the end of term for those students interested, unfortunately our coach Maxine Baring’s work commitments are not going to allow for this to happen so there will be no more training sessions in Term One. I thank Maxine and our captains Skye and Lukas for their superb efforts this season and we will hope to offer some winter coaching/training sessions at HILAC so stay tuned for more information on this next term.
Table Tennis/Badminton
Last Wednesday we had approximately 20 students travel to Melbourne to compete in the ICCES Table Tennis and Badminton competitions at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Against some strong competition, especially in the badminton, our boys finished 5th in the junior boys and 6th in the senior boys. In the table tennis, we finished 4th overall out of 7 schools. Congratulations to all the students who competed and Mrs Murphy for supervising on the day.
If you are interested in joining in a fun internal competition at the Sports Centre in either of these sports, then please let Mrs Murphy know.
