Year 5 Camp
The Year 5 students recently returned from three spectacular days at Cape Bridgewater. The group went caving at Bat’s Bridge Reserve, surfing at Cape Bridgewater, walking sections of the Great South West Walk and canoeing on Bridgewater Lakes. The weather was superb, and this made for a warm enjoyable camping experience. Thanks to Mrs Mackarness for her support of the students, and Auscamp staff for their excellent program.
Three Way Interviews
Next Tuesday, Wednesday (Prep/Year 1 only) and Thursday, teachers will be conducting three-way interviews with students and parents. The aim of these interviews is to set goals for Semester One. The goals could relate to specific areas of the curriculum, or be behavioural or social. One aspect that is often overlooked when goal setting, is making an action plan to accompany your goals. We can become so focused on the outcome that we forget to plan all of the steps that are needed along the way. A strategy to assist could be to write out the individual steps, and then cross each one off as you complete it. This will assist you to realise that you are making progress towards your goal.
Compass Award
This week, the final student booklets arrived for the Year 5 students who have enrolled in The Compass Award. This is the start of a program of discovery for our Year 5 students. Modelled on The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, The Compass Award is designed to enhance development of the individual child. Students aged 10-14 years old choose their own challenging activities, learn new skills and in the process, develop initiative and commitment, becoming more responsible and motivated young people. The Compass Award is the chance to gain the benefits of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at an earlier age.
There are 4 levels of The Compass Award. Each level is broadly aimed at the corresponding age, eg Level 1 for those in Year 5, Level 2 for those in Year 6 and so on. To achieve The Compass Award at any Level, young people create a unique program of activities (for a set length of time) across four Sections as outlined below.
- Physical Recreation – improve physical and emotional wellbeing
- Hobbies / Skill – develop the mind
- Volunteering – connect with the community
- Exploration – increase confidence in unfamiliar places
Participants are encouraged to undertake their activities over a period of time rather than complete Award requirements in a single session.
