work experience

Careers Counsellor

Students in Year 9 are being asked to look ahead to their Year 10 Careers Education when they will have the opportunity to participate in Work Experience during Term 2 next year: May 13 and May 17 2019.

As students start to narrow their learning pathways,  it is important that they have a general sense of which career or industry they are aiming for, and so their Work Experience week can be a very important turning point for them. Students are expected to organise their own work placement position however all placements must be approved by the school and meet the relevant criteria.

Year 9 students have already received a Work Experience pack, which includes these details about the program, students' rights and responsibilites, as well as necessary paperwork for parents/carers to complete.

It is important that students and their parents/carers familiarise themselves with this material and start to look ahead to identify and pursue work placement positions as soon as possible.  By being proactive, students will be organised and best able to get the most from this opportunity.

Students are encouraged to visit me in the Careers office with any questions that they may have - I will be more than happy to clarify details and to suggest possible placements.

Where can students find placement?

Over past years, students have enjoyed placements in diverse fields - in hospitals, architect firms, law courts,  scientific research laboratories, building companies, mechanical workshops, schools, administration positions, libraries, museums, landcare, theatre, textiles and with health specialists such as doctors, physiotherapists and chiropractors.

Students are only limited by their imagination, so I hope that they aspire to find a placement that will provide them with an experience that will help them to make decisions in regard to their learning and career pathways.

The Work Experience Program is governed by strict regulations; employers must complete paperwork to ensure that they meet OHS and Childsafe requirements and all placements are reviewed by the Careers Coumsellor and Ms Harris, Principal.

Can you help?

To support the program, parents and families are encouraged to investigate whether their own workplaces may be interested in hosting a student (other than their own). If you know of any businesses that are interested, please contact the Careers Counsellor office - careers@brunswick.vic.gov.au.
